I had a Logitech trackball which had defective buttons. I needed to replace the original switches with improved after market ones which required the de soldering the old switches. I had an old style manual solder sucker on hand and it was terrible and finally broke. I came across this tool and wow, what a difference! This makes quick work of simple de-soldering. It worked extremely well and removing all the old solder leaving clean holes for the replacement switches. I am quite happy with my purchase.

This thing works great, I can remove a TO-220 transistor from a heavy trace PCB in about 20 seconds. No damage. Hot enough for lead free solder and did not require any flux. Hold the button down until you remove the iron from the PCB or the sucked up solder will spatter back onto what ever it is pointed at. I use a paper plate for solder collection. Spatter is easily cleaned up if mistakes are made.

I gave it 5 stars because it works great. But if you clean out the solder, watch closely how it comes apart. The instructions don’t tell how to put it back together.

One of my major hobbies are of mechanical keyboards. This would sometimes entails the work of soldering switches onto blank PCBs or desoldering terrible switches on a good PCB. FOr the longest time, I was using a manual desoldering pump that required rearming after each suction. While it was working fine, I found it tedious and time consuming. I was looking for a decent desoldering gun, but those would run $130-$300. I'm glad I found this one.Don't let the cheap price fool you. This desoldering iron performs great. It works by first using the hollow heated tip to melt the solder and with a push down and hold of a button, the built-in solenoid pump, sucks up the molten solder. Make sure you maintain holding down the button, as once the button is released, the sucked up solder will shoot out of the tip. The action is very smooth and quick. It definitely makes desoldering the switches actually fun to do.
