My wife and I loved the film
Having read the other reviews I bought this film thinking the reviews were over the top or at least exaggerated. My husband and I loved the film. Delightfully simple plot wonderfully acted by the cast it portrays a postmaster transferred to a small town near Naples. The understanding of all is that the South have dirty filthy people who don't wash clean with no sense at all. Thick farmers at best. When he gets there he is told that northerners cry when they get there and again when they leave. This is the case here. In desperation at the thought of it on arrival. After a fantastic two years there enjoying every second (and the antics he gets up to telling his wife its hell when he gets a couple of days off to visit his wife back home up north) then his wife comes South to be at his side while he goes through this hell. When two years is up, as they said at the start, tears flow as he prepares to go back north. I have bought the follow up Al Nord hoping it will be as good. An uplifting feel good film for all the family.

Italian Fun in the Sun
You would think that an Italian comedy about a postman from the north of Italy taking up a new position in the south would not provide many laughs. However this is a real laugh out loud film in places, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Its main focus is on the cultural and lifestyle differences between the north and the south of Italy. Claudio Bisio has a fixed one dimensional view of the south populated by thieves, murderers, The Camorra and dimwits. His responses to these perceived threats is hilarious at times. Needless to say he gradually comes around to his life in the south. There is a strong cast who add to the confusion and bring their own unique characters, special mention has to go to Valentina Lodovini whose sexy walk across the piazza to work is worth the price of the film on its own. All in all this is a real feel good film with plenty of laughs, a film only the Italians or French could make. I just hope the Americans do not get their hands on it and make an awful remake.

love it!
I would give this film 6* if I could : )) .This is the South meets the North , and old stereotypes and differences between those two parts of Italy seen through the eyes of both; northerners and southerners. When main character Alberto learns that he is going to be transfered at work from the North, near Milan to the South, a small village near Naples he initially gets scared, and his family, and friends all add to his fears telling how bad and dangerous life and people are in the South. On top of that people in the South speak a dialect completely incomprehensible to poor Alberto, who speaks proper Italian. As he settles here and gets to know locals and his staff at work he learns that life here is positively different, slower ,more relaxed and people friendly and open, and that not everyone is a cammorrista. The fim is a comedy with a lot of funny situations ( which some might seem to be a little exaggerated but are really good fun),bilingual dialogues( bizzare!)and wonderful neapolitan music , with breathtaking sea views!! I simply love this film and yes , I would recommend it : ))))). English and Italian subtitles provided.

Sub titles are available!
Quirky and heart warming film! Entertaining but not a classic! As a Italian language beginner it was amusing and interesting to be able to pick up some of the language used.

Some like it hot…but this is not.
This film made for people who love all things Italian. The first time I watched this movie, I only got as far as when the main character pretended to be physically challenged, by this, he stood a good chance of landing his dream job. I wasn't happy about the latter, so put it aside. Later I thought I would give it another shot, and I wasn't disappointed as it proved to be in context, humorous, and almost believable. The main actors are excellent, and the extras do a fair job too. I was able to follow the story without resorting to the English subtitles after only the first viewing. I have watched it over and over, each time liking it more as its supporting our/my language skills.

Benvenutti al Sud (Welcome to the South)
I bought Benvenutti al Sud after seeing it at a small Italian Film Festival at the Phoenix cinema East Finchley. It is one of the wittiest and entertaining films, and I loved it because it is about life, no shooting or killing. The main character is a man who works at the Post Office in Milan, and as his contract is coming to an end, he desperately tries to extend it and stay in Milan. Well he doesn't and he is sent to a small town south of Naples. What the film is trying to show us is the difference between the north and the south, to start with the language, then their way of life and the attitude of the southern Italians towards life. The script is great and the actors are superb. One comes out of the cinema with a new energy to face life. I think that if anybody who is depressed should watch this movie instead of taking anti-depressants. It is beautifully hilarious!

English Subtitles
I notice another reviewer has already mentioned this, but I want to state again for prospective buyers that this DVD DOES have English subtitles even though it states just Italian for the Hard of Hearing on the box. I bought this in a hurry before Christmas and I didn't check, but not to worry as it was for my Italian Mama. I was almost going to return it. Glad I didn't as it is a great film. Funny; especially so if you know about the Italian South and their way of speaking.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this film, even though i am english and only understand italain to certain level, this film still makes me laugh out loud (LOL) after seeing it more than 3 times i laugh each time, its so clever so( if you have ever visited the south of italy) how it seems to by/pass language and just works so well on a comic level, on a parr with the english greats such as dadas army and the ever great carry on films, but in italian with italain finese!!!

Hilarious look at Italy's "Great Divide"
A funny and charming look at the prejudices that sometimes separate northern and southern Italy and also the quirks of small-town Italian life. Might not mean as much to someone who hasn't spent a lot of time in Italy, but I think it would still be enjoyable for the characters and scenery. There are English subtitles, but you will need a DVD player capable of playing European formats.

Film molto divertente!
Consigliato
