Being Boss: Take Control of Your Work and Live Life on Your Own Terms

Being Boss isn't just a way of working -- it's a way of life
Being Boss: Take Control of Your Work and Live Life on Your Own Terms is a rare book that recognizes that running a business is more than a way of working, it's a way of life. Anyone who has chosen to become an entrepreneur knows that every choice you make can either bring you closer to the life you want -- whether you're looking for more freedom to travel, be with family, or choose your own clients -- or farther away from it.Authors Emily Thompson and Kathleen Shannon set the tone right from the beginning in sharing their own different routes to entrepreneurship, what "Being Boss" means to them, and providing exercises at the beginning of the book to help you clarify what it means to you. This book is beautifully designed, full of exercises and case studies from other entrepreneurs, and doesn't shy away from some of the tougher realities of running your own business. My absolute favorite part of the book "The Scientific Method for Creatives" takes the sting away from one of the harsher realities -- you will be rejected! -- and turns it into a process of experimentation you can learn from.I can't recommend Being Boss enough for creative entrepreneurs starting out on the path, or for anyone looking for a reset and a refresher.

OBSESSED. And so grateful.
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! And it came at the perfect time for me. For so long I've struggled to find a book that honors both my left-brain and right-brain. It seems like most books feel either too business-y (and boring) without the creative/intuitive aspect, or that they are too emotional and not practical/strategic enough. But Being Boss hits both nails on the head.Written by two relatable, badass women with years of experience doing the work, this book has helped me face my fears so that I can channel my inner entrepreneur, get clear on my goals and visions in a way that *feels right* to me, and has equipped me with the practical tools, tips, and advice to make all the things actually happen in my work and my life. I keep coming back to this book for the wisdom and incredibly helpful exercises, and I'm SO grateful to the authors - Emily and Kathleen - for creating this amazing resource.P.S. It's definitely worth it to buy the hard copy. The book design is GORGEOUS!

Helped me so much!
I love Emily and Kathleen. I started listening to their podcast a little over a year ago and quickly listened to all the episodes. I was so happy when I learned they were writing a book! The book is amazing. It's beautiful and it is inspiring. The message is simple "do the work"...whatever that is for you. The book laso has worksheets to set your goals and intentions, mindset tips, daily rituals... everything you need to know in case you get stuck or lost along the way.I am so happy i bought this book. It is one I will read over and over again.

Being Boss is an authentic and actionable resource producing meaningful results for anyone looking to improve their workflow.
Being Boss is the first business or leadership book I have read that is written in such an authentic voice and in such an actionable way. The writing is fluid and meaningful, and there are no over-simplified tropes. I have listened regularly to the Being Boss podcast, and I love how the book distills many of the takeaways from the podcast and adds step-by-step guides to get you out of your head and doing the work. Working from intention to habits and routines and beyond, under the Being Boss guidance, has helped me significantly with framing my creative business, cutting out the fruitless work, and getting the most efficiency out of every minute I invest in my creativity and my business. It is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their workflow or that of their team, whether in a creative space or not.

This Books Sets the Bar High
This book sets the bar so high for others in this genre. I'm self-employed (freelancer) on my third year and I feel like I hit a ceiling where I'm no longer moving forward in my business. I love listening to podcasts and was introduced to Emily a few weeks ago where she was a guest. The book provides so much valuable information that I'm not sure where to even start. I immediately implemented the chalkboard method (I already use a whiteboard for to-do lists) and the way that I reframed my goals is so compelling and motivating. It really helped me to laser focus on what I want out of my business and gave useful advice for implementing. I love that Emily and Kathleen list out their own routines that they use for being boss. I've found some missing links that need addressed with my business as well as other areas of my life. The book essentially helps you define a roadmap for becoming the best version of yourself. Buy this book if you're ready to become a true boss and get into the driver's seat of running your own business.

Being boss of your own life or finding a boss in a day job that allows you to boss
Great book for both the one who wants to start their own business or for someone evaluating their day job "boss" requirements to be boss at what they do. Chapter 2 is my favorite part of this book. How can one expect someone to value you if you don't know what you value yourself. Evaluating the values is a great foundation for your professional goals as well as your self being.

This the best guide for creative people and I love it 'cause in my country there's nothing like it <3
Well, I have to say that I am a fan of the podcast for some time now and I am REALLY happy to have this book in my hands. There's nothing like Kathleen and Emily in my country, Chile, where all entrepeneurship stuff is plain boring and lacks of soul and aesthetics (which is a very important issue when you are an artist seeking to "Do the Work").Thanks to the podcast and book I am super motivated to grow my business to the next level: I am already known in my country, I started a contemporary wave of botanical art and I have lots of students and things going on, but now it's time to get legal and so on.I really enjoy their tone, and it feels like I know them already. The book is dynamic and the design gorgeous and super contemporary. So if you are a Boss already and need advice and energy to grow and live fearlessly, buy this book and keep it close!Geri.

Really good book
I love this book! It's aimed at entrepreneurs but don't let that put you off. I lead a team but am not self employed and don't particularly aspire to be but there is a lot of really useful information in this book. The book is easy to read but stunningly designed and the pages are really thick and good quality. I will reread many times in the future.

Would recommend - beautiful book, boss inspiration, real talk
First let me say that the Being Boss podcast has provided me with hours of free and very informative business advice. I really value this and appreciate the work Emily and Kathleen put in. To support them, I bought their book. I thought it might be very similar to their podcast but it truly is the best lessons from the podcast rolled into one - and with added content! I'm so happy with this purchase. This book is beautiful and goes beyond the surface to help you understand what really drives you and your business and how to put yourself in a position to be successful. I love their informal tone and how blunt the advice is. I think one of the best parts is they never make you feel overwhelmed or intimidated, which is lovely. Finally, I appreciate that they touched on the nuts and bolts of branding, planning out a business and attracting customers. I'd love to see more content relating to the running of a business from them in future! Thanks Emily and Kathleen!

Don’t hesitate to buy this book & buy one for a friend too!!
As a long time listener of the Being Boss podcast I wondered whether this book would be old content regurgitated but no! The ladies have done a great job with this book outlining how they keep aligned with their values while being boss in work & life. I’m going to buy a whole bunch of extra copies to give as gifts!!
