The opening is 1 1/2 inches wide. Looks to me like it would easily fit a silver dollar. My son loves it and it's nice and big so takes a while to fill up, unlike most piggy banks I've seen.

Q: What are the dimensions of the large bank?

I bought it for my four year old grandson.its quite big 10 in x 7in.He totally loves it.

Q: Do you have to break this to open it?

No. It has an opening at the bottom.
