love it! spellbinding. just really wonderful to read x
just finished this book and abosloutely love it. have read the book 'peig' and enjoyed that so much i had to get this one. im so glad i did. its just wonderful. had me chuckling..lol. specially with the 2 women nora and nance fighting over the guy when they both wanted the jug of milk. yes, the english words and phrases are outdated but that is the charm of it. you read it as it is given. i thouroughly enjoyed it. theres the woman who scrambled through thorns and bushes to grab 3 of old kates fish she had hanging outside and old kate was watching to see no hawk or eagle would have them. and later she goes to the house of the lady who swiped them and ate some there. they both had a laugh. its truly magical and wondrous. i wish i had met this wondeful lady. i have bought every book written on the blasket island and now iv read 2, il read the rest and write reviews. this woman truly was amazing. there are some really sad heart wrenching times like when her son fell to his death on the cliffs and she had to prepare his body and mould his skull to shape. oh my God! this woman has led a life of pain and simple happiness. i still had myself chuckling so much. gosh! did they live nosey lives...lol. so many funny incidents like when she first went on a train and moved a coat that was covering the seat and folded it to give space enough for the devil to sit on. and the owner of the coat came with another guy and he was big and she says to him theres enough room for your bulk to sit on that, iv purchased and paid my ticket with good money like you. good for you Peig..what a feisty lady, she said it as it is. you cant help but be bowled over by the charm of the lives they led in those days, the story telling, theres lots in this book. i just love this book. and i say to you Peig - God give you help for the long road you are now on. Amen xxxx

A wonderful account of a life now in the past
A wonderful account of a life now in the past. Her words conjure up an essence of the folk living on the Blasket Islands and put flesh on the bones of abandoned cottages. A shame I can't read it in Gaelic!

I was hoping to find out more about Blasket Island ...
I was hoping to find out more about Blasket Island from a woman's point of view, but her stories are more of a general nature. A bit disappointing.
