Babylon 5: The Gathering [DVD]

The concept proved even better as it grew
The Gathering suffers a little from the manner in which the subsequent series developed. Those who watched the series will recognise the inconsistencies which surface when they view this pilot. The make-up and prosthetics were greatly improved in the subsequent series as well, as did the CGI backgrounds. That said, Londo Mollari, G'Kar, DeLenn and Security Chief Garibaldi all are in character from the off. The story is sound and leads into the series well, despite the small inconsistencies between the pilot and the series. This version has been digitally remastered, and gives some cleaner and clearer pictures as a result. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story arc, though I'll confess that I found the 'team' which included Bruce Boxleitner and Claudia Christian really brought the brilliant writing of J Michael Strazinski to life. The late Michael O'Hare is rather 'wooden' in his role, as are one or two others, but if you want to get the whole of the Baylon 5 story, this pilot has to be a part of your collection.

Great Maker...
B5 was the TV series that shook up trekkies. Farscape did too. At last a tv series where the story wasn't episode per episode. The characters grew. They were all flawed like we are.Babylon 5 is the love of my life. I'm 45 now and it gets better with age.If you've not seen it. Its been called a space opera, lord of the rings in space and so forth. Lorien always said, embrace life and simply Be. Embrace Babylon 5. You'll love it.

Great DVD but be sure which edition you are ordering.
This is an excellent TV film from an iconic series. However, I ordered this from the description where the last paragraph stated that it was the later 1998 edition with extra footage and a different music soundtrack. The one I received was the original 1993 version, which I already have, but I'd like to get the special edition. Is there any way of specifying this when listing and ordering?

certainly for B5 fans
but perhaps not the best introduction if you're not. The main pity is the absurdity of the plot (demi-god Vorlon being nearly killed by silly ruse), and Delenn is somewhat less hot than in main series. But ... it does throw out pointers to the plot-lines which will become major as the story-arc develops.I've given it 5 as B5 must be one of the closest things to a great work of art produced by TV.

And so it begins....
When i watched series 1 of Babylon 5 I realised I had missed the pilot so went back and here it is!The makeup is not quite there in this one, some of the aliens look different and some of the characters don't make it out of the pilot but it's a good beginning. This really sets the scene for how things will develop throughout the first series and I found it to be a good storyline that kept me watching throughout.

Original Score - Not Special Edition
Lets face it, you're only going to buy this if you are a B5 fan and probably already have all 5 series on DVD. So I am not going to review the disc, other than to post a warning.Despite the 'On The DVD' section of the selling barf saying this is the special edition of the DVD featuring a new score by Christopher Franke, THIS IS NOT THE CASE.I only bought this disc because I had the original version on VHS with Stuart Coplin's score, and wanted the Chris Franke version, as this would form a better bridge between the Pilot and season 1. So I was disappointed that this disc is actually the same original version with Stuart Coplin's synth-pop score. So if you want the special edition because of the revised score, go elsewhere because this ain't it.

Fun to watch for B5 fans
We'd only seen the pilot once, many years ago. Fun to watch and see the changes made to characters and makeup. It does fill out background details mentioned in the main series. A nice addition to our B5 boxed sets.
