Easy upgrade from DS215J to DS224+
The limitations of my trusty DS215J had become all too apparent over the years as the size of digital camera files has steadily increased. I as also keen to explore some options such as Home Automation running as a VM or Docker container. Finally, Synology's DSM 7.0 was the final version that supports the DS215J and I felt uncomfortable running an unsupported OS/hardware setup..Having a background in IT, I knew the importance of caching and this led me to the DS224+. I was able to add 8Gb RAM and the installation (via the removable front panel was a breeze). File accesses are now much faster (e.g. refreshing thumbnails of a folder of 50 images is approx 4-5x faster). The other compelling factor is the ultra-low power consumption; hard to believe that it's the same as an LED light bulb and even lower on stand-by.I did look at other devices but the combination of the hassle factor and poor reviews convinced me to stay with the market leader - I'm glad I did!

Steep learning curve
Hasn't let me down so far and it's stable in use. I did upgrade the memory to 6gb from the outset though. If you have used Synology DSM or Linux previously it's a bit of a steep learning curve getting to grips with it. Nothing too difficult though and gets easier once you've grasped the basics. I bought mine to reduce my dependence on cloud services from the main service providers and in that respect it's a good choice.

Synology NAS server DS224+
Just updated my old synology NAS to this, the new DS224+. Big difference from the old one as this has the Intel Chip with built in graphics, so will transcode video in different formats depending on device being used to view content. Runs Plex server brilliantly. Was going to try a different manufacturer this time, but decided to stick with synology. Thier operating system (DSM OS) is flawless. Just put my Hard drives from the old synology Nas to the new one and using the 'migrate' function was up and running with no loss of data in around 30 minutes.

Good and works well if you know in advance what it does and what you want it for.
Been using this for a month or so now.Summary.Good and works well if you know in advance what it does and what you want it for. I wanted it for PC back-up and also selecting videos/music from it on my TV and here it’s isn’t good and external storage would have been better. The good.(1) It’s all now working very well, and great where you want to have multiple machines all with the same content without going to an external cloud.(2) The software is very comprehensive. The “DS file” app on my phone which automatically transfers my phones photos to the Drive & my PC’s works flawlessly and was quick and easy to set up.The bad.(1) On receipt, the power supply had a US plug. (I live in the UK and ordered via Amazon UK). I contacted Amazon for help, they wouldn’t engage, or give me a contact at the supplier, the only option they would give me was to return the whole unit for a refund. After much googling, I assured myself the power supply was OK for UK voltage, so I bought a travel adapter to get it up and running.(2) For a newbie it is very difficult to set-up and will take a lot of time. Instructions ex Synology aren’t sufficient but thankfully there are good videos from other users on YouTube. I spent pretty much 1½ days setting it up not really as I wanted it, so then did a factory reset and started again as I realised that time was really just getting me up the learning curve.(3) Not good as a back-up, which is what I wanted it for. You can only select 1 destination and 1 source folder to back-up! In the end I set it up to duplicate everything between my PC and laptop so along with this NAS they are now each-others back-up.(4) When browsing the contents of the media player on your smart TV or PC it will only show a generic tile rather than a picture icon. That makes selection longer and irritating because you have to read titles. The now ancient / now dead WD MyCloud which the Synology DS224+ NAS replaced showed picture thumbnails which was far better.
