helps some to slow down our pug when he eats
When we first got our pug Spanky a few years back, he was a mere 8 weeks old and had to be encouraged to eat. Fast forward two years and he now literally inhales his food. I became concerned when he recently vomited because he had eaten so fast. It was then I noticed that he barely chewed his food. I decided to look into some of the food bowls that claim to slow down eating and ended up purchasing this Brake-fast small bowl for him. This plastic bowl is designed for cats and small breed dogs, including flat-faced dogs, such as pugs, and holds up to 1.5 cups of dry kibble. Spanky eats 1 cup of food, twice a day, so this bowl was the perfect size for him. It measures roughly 5.5 inches across the interior and has a depth of about 1.5 inches. This bowl is also available in medium and large sizes. The first time Spanky ate out of it, he was a bit frustrated and probably a little bit angry. It took him well over 5 minutes to finish what he normally would eat in less than a minute. Now he's become a bit more proficient and it takes about 3 minutes to eat his 1 cup of food. He does have to chase around the last few kibbles around the little nobs but he somehow manages. I would recommend that you place it on a small area rug like we do to prevent them from pushing the bowl around. It would be nice to see this have a rubber bottom to prevent the pushing around and help the bowl stay put.The bowl is lightweight and although he hasn't tipped it over, some dogs with larger snouts might be able to do so.I'm still not sure that he's chewing his food any better, but he definitely is taking a bit longer to eat. Eating slower is supposed to make them feel fuller, too, but I'm not sure that has changed any. However, we're pleased that he's slowed down a bit and would definitely recommend this bowl to other dog owners in the same situation. I was concerned with his flat face he wouldn't be able to manage, but he has done quite well

nice concept, but my dogs showed me they are much smarter than this bowl
Out of all my dogs (6 Greyhounds), 2 gulp their food as if they have never been fed before. I am greatly concerned not only about choking but the dreaded, deadly bloat that can occur as a result of eating so fast, especially with barrel-chested dogs. I've tried many things, including feeding them small incremental amounts (1/2 Cup) at a time, but with 6 feeding stations in the kitchen, that gets a bit complicated with the others always wanting 'more' when they see me putting 'more' into these 2 particular bowls.I have also tried putting a much smaller stainless steel bowl (for a much smaller toy breed) upsidedown in their bowls and putting their food around it. This does work, however, liquid and some food always gets underneath so unless I'm standing watch as they eat, they can miss some of their meal: but their 'nose' always 'knows' the food is in there somewhere! This gets messy, too, having to lift out the smaller upsidedown bowl for them to get the last remains of their meals..dripping all the way to the sink, etc.So, I gave in and tried these. While I dislike feeding my guys and gals in plastic (no dishwasher so I hand-wash and want to feel I've gotten them as clean as possible). I do prefer stainless, but will use ceramic if need be although ceramic can slowly wear down teeth in aggressive eaters. I tried these first for the expense. Didn't want to spend $35. on a metal bowl if it didn't work. So, here is what I experienced last night when I tried them out. (They arrived late yesterday afternoon).First, I had to figure out how to make them work with the existing feeding stations. They are very light, weighing only 9.3oz on my kitchen scale. They are 10 5/8" diameter at the widest portion of the base of the bowl while the actual food compartment with the 'pillars' is a mere 7" in diameter and 2.25" deep. The 3 'pillars' are as deep as the bowl (2.25") with the top of the pillar being 1" wide growing in width to the bottom of the bowl to 2" wide. Because there weren't any dimensions provided, I figured no matter what, I could rig something up for them to work with at least 2 of my existing feeding stations. They did not fit in the openings of any of the 4 different type feeding stations I own. The base is too wide, so I put silicone baking mats on the feeding stations covering the opening and placed the bowls on that empty. Didn't slide when I tried moving them around. Next I tried putting some water in the bowl and placing it on the silicone. Again, it didn't move around or spill the water when I tried to make it do so. Figured I had a winner on my hands and got ready to feed the 'kids' their supper meal.Getting food into the bowls past the pillars is messy; spatters and spills all over. I would think it will be the same with plain dry kibble. So on the second bowl, I mixed the food in a separate bowl and tried slowly pouring it into this one. Same mess and this time, all the food landed in one spot almost overflowing the side; the pillars prevented the kibble mixed with fresh steamed veggies from filling the bowl evenly so a spoon/spatula was needed. Placed the bowls in front of the two aggressive eaters on their silicone mats that worked like a charm in the test run. HA! Guess I'm not as clever as my dogs. I turned my back to put down the last of the 6 bowls and the most aggressive eater was already done eating. Not only had he eaten just as fast as always, but he managed to do it while chewing off one of the pillars to allow him easier, quicker access to the food. (I found large chunks of the pillar on the floor beneath his station, just like a child hiding his peas)! The second dog who got one of these bowls did eat slower, but when his frustration level peaked, he simply grabbed the bowl by the pillar, flipped it up in the air, and chowed down once his supper splattered all over the floor, the wall and down the heating vent grate.Maybe I can use these for my starter plants for this summer's garden.

Watch out for return shipping fees
I have been looking for a red slow feeder dog bowl and found this. I did measure the space and it was going to work. Unfortunately, what came is too small for the hole in my dog's raised feeder. It falls right through to the floor. So, I started a return. And then promptly cancelled the return. Here's why: Slow feeder bowl $10.99 Return Shipping Fee $5.19Not worth returning it when I'm going to get LESS than half of what I paid back.Three stars is for the amount being deducted from my refund for the return shipping fee

Good Slow Feeder
I purchased this bowl for my 2 year old girl who inhales her food.It does help. She still acts like she hasn't had anything in a week, but it has slowed her down a bit.It is sturdy and just the right size for her- she gets a cup and a half twice a day.Thank you!

Get one smaller than you think you need.
Worked to slow down a voracious beagle. Get one that is smaller than you think you need. That will keep the stems closer together. It makes it harder to eat fast.If your dog is still aspirating food, (my beagle did that constantly) try wetting your dry food. That worked to stop him from gulping food.

Brilliant invention
My dog used to eat his meal in less than ten seconds. This bowl has slowed him down enough so he now finishes at the same time as my other dog and doesn't try and eat his food! I have a Jack Russell and the small size is perfect for him. However, if you had a dog with a wider muzzle, even if it was a small breed (e.g a West Highland Terrier) you might want to go up a size as I think they would have trouble getting the food out. It's a really great invention and well worth the money. Made of good strong material too. Very fast delivery.

Dog bowl
I just wrote an outstanding review of this bowl, but I forgot to mention that it has no rubber stops on the bottom so within a couple of days I went down and got a rubber pad so his water and his bowl would not slide around. I have now put in an order for the bowl that has rubber stops on it. Thank you.
