My new laptop only has two USB ports, so with the mouse and keyboard connected there was nowhere left to plug in my external hard drive.Connecting the mouse and keyboard through this splitter freed up a USB port for the hard drive and has worked reliably without any connection issues. It's reliable and good quality

The cable is only about 5 inches long, so avoids the common problem of "cable clutter" on the desk.This is a USB A port-splitter, for a desktop or a laptop computer, for connecting to a USB 2.0 port (does not support USB 3). It has 1 male USB size A input, and 2 female USB size A outputs.Both of the female outputs allow for both data transfer and power transfer, so either output can be used for either data or for charging.This is a big advantage compared to many similar products. Some other products only allow charging (i.e. power), not data transfer at all. While some products allow data transfer on one output only, but allow charging from both. This KiwiBird item doesn't have those disadvantages.The thing to watch out for with any USB 2.0 splitter is the current: a USB 2.0 rated port can only supply 500 milliamps (0.5 amps) of electric current. If you split its output, the two USB devices you connect to it must NOT exceed 500 mA (milliamps) in total.A connected device is initially permitted to draw up to 100 mA. It must then communicate with the Windows host controller, to negotiate and draw the maximum allowed 500 mA. If more than one device asks for power, they share the maximum between them.Some desktops and laptops running Windows might have manufacturer-specific technologies (like Gigabyte's ON/OFF Charge or ASUS's Ai Charger). If the computer supports these features, specialized drivers allow the USB port to supply between 1.5 Amps to 2.7 Amps for rapid charging, even on older USB 2.0 ports.For the exact power limits of the USB ports in your Windows computer, check the "Power" tab in Device Manager (under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section).Never use this splitter (which is rated USB 2.0 only) to connect devices to a standard USB 2.0 port, where the devices (together) require more than 500 milliamps! Don't connect ANY so-called "high power" devices to this splitter, as that is normally a euphemism for needing more power than a normal USB 2.0 port can supply.For example, if I connect a USB mouse (mine is rated 100 mA) to one output, my 2nd output can only supply a maximum of 400 mA. Check on the box: a USB gadget should be clearly marked on the box with its rating in milliamps.Don't connect this splitter to a USB 3 port! USB 3.0 is rated at 900 mA, which will likely burn out the chip in this cable, as it is nearly double the power.
