No Joke, a Gastric Patient's Best Friend
I entered into gastric sleeve surgery shockingly (for me) under-informed - I guess I didn't know what I didn't know, to the extent that I was clueless. Turns out, though I had my surgery a week ago at "Boston's best hospital" (aren't they all?) I got little-to-no individualized attention or consideration, and throughout received canned responses and lowest common denominator information.Enter Dr. Vuong's book. Without it I truly - no joke - could not have done this journey even to the extent that I have. I luckily found it through searching Amazon, ordered it, and spent the month before surgery reading and re-reading it. Suddenly I had informed questions to ask! Suddenly I felt like I'd indeed have a normal life when the initial stages were over - but not the SAME life. Yes, I"d have an ice cream with my son again, or tapas in Spain. But no, I'd not revert to doing all the same things that had brought me to the miserable point of surgery in the first place.Dr. Vuong is a gastric patient's best friend, no kidding, and I"m not a relative :) . His little video shorts are wonderful, his seemingly simple (and poorly named) "Weight Loss Surgery Success" a useful, concise guide to thinking differently (as opposed to the usual self-involved tomes on "mindfulness" and eating that spend much of their text focusing on the author). I've just learned about "periscope" on which he apparently gives broadcasts, and i intend to follow him on that. He's more than just informational. He's hopeful, he's kind, he's clear, and he gives action points rather than theory. Do this! It'll help!I'm am admittedly a bit emotional - first days of gastric surgery are not the easiest. But I honestly feel that had I not found Dr. Vuong's book, I'd be in a world of confusion and unhappiness right now. How very lucky we are that he wrote this.Dr Vuong, thank you. You've helped more than you can possibly know.

Excited for this journey with this exquisite tool!
I am currently in the process of preparing myself for the gastric sleeve procedure. I haven't met with my physician yet to actually discuss this but I am leaning more towards the gastric sleeve than the RNY just because I feel it has fewer risks, complications, and malabsorption issues. I bought this book to educate myself a little more, and because it was HIGHLY recommended by the folks on my weight loss surgery support group online. After getting this book and looking it over, I'm super excited to jump in and start reading! At a wuick glance I'm very pleased to see there are extremely helpful images. I have always been the "learn by watching" type of person so to have illustrations is very nice. Also, I LOVE that this book has little quizzes at the end of the sections to make sure you're actually absorbing the information that you're reading. If not you can always go back and see where your issues were, reread and make sure you're ready for your procedure! While I still have a long, long way to go I believe this book will be a HUGE help in making my gastric sleeve a success in a big, big way! I am definitely pleased that I made this purchase, especially for the price. Every little bit of help counts and this, in my opinion, is going to be a HUGE help on educating myself and preparing for my journey ahead! Thank you so much for making this available to the public!! Such a wonderful learning tool!

This is a GREAT resource for anyone considering or has had gastric sleeve
This is a GREAT resource for anyone considering or has had gastric sleeve. The book actually focuses on changing how you think and about making better choices which is crucial to success. Following the 3 rules laid out seems easy enough but putting them into practice is different. So the one topic I was hoping to read more about was eating--specifically how/what to eat. Yes, I know protein first, best nutritional choices and all you can eat fruits and veggies... As someone who is literally changing my relationship with food these choices are easier said than done. I simply wish there was a sample mealplan as a framework to get started. Otherwise, great read!! Highly recommend!

One of the best -- if not the best -- of all the bariatric surgery guides
Before and after my bariatric surgery I bought a lot of guides. I haven't reviewed some because I could find nothing good to say about them, but this is one of the best -- if not THE best. The difference, I believe, lies in Dr Duc Vuong's infectious enthusiasm for good food.Food is what preoccupies us before bariatric surgery -- and it sure as shootin' is on our minds after bariatric surgery. The point is to make a new start, and to dump the bad old ways. This is what Dr Vuong teaches us to do.As a Vietnamese, and obviously a very gifted home cook as well as a fine surgeon, he is familiar with cooking high-protein meals using the best fish and seafood -- and I cannot imagine my post-operation diet without fish and seafood. It really is a key ingredient, full of protein, yet light on the bad stuff. His overall emphasis on quality fresh food strikes a real chord with me. I believe that many overweight people -- well, me for a start -- do not think too much about food, but rather, too little, cramming processed junk into our mouths without considering or even tasting what we are devouring. To appreciate food -- and understand what it contains -- is the first step on the road to health. This is not to say that this excellent book contains nothing but recipes, far from it. But the advice on eating is so good, and so important, that I heartily recommend this book for that alone. At 70lbs down, I have to thank Dr Vuong for writing this.

information is your best friend
Everyone can benefit from reading this book before and/or after bariatric surgery. When attending bariatric classes and support groups before and after surgery, I've been shocked by the number of people who are woefully uninformed (or in a fantasy land of denial) about eating behaviors, nutrition and bariatric surgery. Clearly, the "classes" aren't enough to get people to open up, learn and deal with underlying issues so that bariatric surgery can be used as a tool for successfully managing food, eating, body weight, healthy lifestyle, etc. This book covers everything you need to know and think about. Resistance to information might be a big clue that you're really not willing to make the changes needed. The surgery isn't a magic procedure that fixes everything. This book will help you if you really want to make the necessary lifestyle/behavioral changes needed to reach you're "normal", healthy, body weight and maintain it. Dr. Vuong's videos on YouTube are also a great resource.Thank You Dr. Vuong for all the information you've put out to help all of us struggling with body weight/obesity issues. I appreciate your direct, clear, straight talk.

Worth the money and time
My husband and I are both beginning the journey of gastric sleeve. His surgery was 1/27 and mine is scheduled for 3/9. I believe this book did so much to prepare my head for this journey. I had already gone through the three month requirement of meetings for my insurance. I learned so much more in this book than in those meetings. This journey not just about having your insides 'fixed'. Our brains must be prepared as well. I am going to read it a second, and maybe third time, as I am sure there are more Ah Ha moments to be discovered. I have already began changing the way I think about food and have dropped 20 pounds since mid January. I really believe even people in general that do not meet the requirements for surgery would benefit from the advice in this book. I wish I had purchased the actual book instead of the ebook though. There are multiple things I highlighted in the ebook but would love to have the print version for sharing as well.

Combo of decent and outdated info
There is some helpful info however it is outdated. From 2013. I just had surgery and it stated I would have an incision in a certain place, I do not nor does anyone else I know who has had the sleeve. Perhaps that is a former place to create an incision. The dietary advice I also find poor. Really pushing soy as healthy where youโll be hard pressed to find a functional medicine professional who would agree with that. Estrogen issues. Or he would give advise but it would be lacking a full explanation, exceptions.Thankfully I have been following pros who keep up on clean food and nutrition. But for someone who isnt as well-versed, there is a lot lacking. Even the protein grams recommended vary from any pro I have worked with. And omits the warnings of what could happen if enough veggies and water is not consumed with high protein (kidney issues). Many people with obesity have fatty liver which actually requires extra protein, according to a top liver pro I worked with personally. So to cut that amount almost in half, without explaining exceptions, I feel too many people would follow this advice without realizing how important it is two work with a knowledgeable (key word) professional on what is right for YOU.Otherwise itโs not a long book. It is easy to read. And I got a few tips I liked but questioned the validity and efficacy of others, wondering if they were outdated.I would rather see a revised version of this book.

Well Worth the Money for Before & After Surgery
Gave me so much information to prepare me for surgery and what to expect after surgery. I could kick myself for not having the surgery 20 years ago as my doctor wanted for me. What a difference I feel now. If you thinking about Gastric Sleeve surgery read the book.
