Q: Looks like it may be too heavy, so what keeps the jar from falling over?

It's not that heavy and is actually very light. The jars that I used with the ones that I bought are the short wide mouth jar. I bought them for my quilting group and we all love them.

Q: what size canning jar? Pint?

I used mine on the 1 1/2 pint jar. Can use on the pint and quart also. Depends on what you want to put into the jar. Filled mine with bobbins.

Q: Easy to see it’ll stay on jar with suction, but what holds it in place, for easy access to contents, with a pin cushion on top?

It works really well. The ones I got were for the wide mouth. You cut out the top and it fits on there tight when you push it on the jar. The pin cushion is easy to create and once it goes on the first time, it all stays in place. We love them. I bought them for my quilting group.

Q: will the rubber dull my pins and needles?

I have other pin cushions made of rubber, I have never noticed my pins being dull.
