Q: When do you replace the filter?

when the filter is partly clogged and hard to totally clean.or every one or two months.

Q: Can the small, round black filter part (that submerges in water) be replaced/purchased?

Yes you can, though I haven’t had the need too yet. It washes out easily. If you search “ Marineland SeaClone Foam Cartridge” on Amazon you can find replacements. It is a 1/2 inch round tube.

Q: Can this be used in a tadpole tank?

No. I tried that today and one of the poor little guys got stuck to the foam filter and I had to turn it off so he could swim away.

Q: Does it use a filter? If so does it need to be replaced?

It has a pre filter sponge type on the inlet and a charcoal type inside. And yes the charcoal one needs to be replaced, depending on use, every 3-6 months. The sponge one can be washed out and can be replaced as needed.
