Clarkson Potter Richard Hart Bread: Intuitive Sourdough Baking

Anyone interested in bread would benefit from the wisdom in this book
I have been baking sourdough for a number of years now. By and large I have followed the Tartine method for my regular baking. While there is an understandable similarity between Tartine and Richard Hart’s new book given the shared history, this book certainly holds its own. The instructions are clear and approachable. So far I have made both the City Loaf and the Sesame City Loaf. Once I realized that my starter would require a more regular feeding to get the job done, I have enjoyed beautiful loaves with a thinner and crisper crust. Regardless of how many bread books you might already own, you are sure to benefit from reading Richard Hart’s encouraging words. I have read many bread books and none have captured how natural and fulfilling bread baking can feel when you don’t overthink it. Next up…Cardamom Buns!

This book deserves a SPOT on your bookshelf!
Richard Hart Bread is one of those books that takes breadmaking to another level without being super pretentious about it. Through years of hard work and trial and error, Hart nails the balance between explaining the technical side and letting you trust your instincts. His approach to sourdough is laid out in a way that feels approachable but not dumbed down. You can tell he's been in the weeds with flour and dough for years. What I love is how Hart keeps the focus on ingredients and why every step matters. It’s not just a list of instructions; it’s a behind-the-scenes look at how to truly think like a baker. It’s perfect for someone like me who’s always looking for ways to sharpen my skills and improve as a baker… but without the fluff. This book isn’t just for professionals either. Whether you're a home baker or just curious, this book makes it feel doable. Not to mention, the book is beautiful and packed with killer photos and a glimpse into the life of arguably the world’s best baker. If you’re into bread, this book definitely deserves a spot on your shelf.

It’s bread, with heart and soul and joy. The most stunning book.
Richard Hart is the best bread baker in the world, but that’s not why this book is so good. He hasn’t kept a single secret - no little nugget of knowledge hidden in his back pocket to make sure he retains the title. He wants you to make world class bread, and he explains everything you need to know with clarity and colour. The book is crammed with knowledge, generosity, and heart. Of course, it also has a load of stunning recipes. This is the best bread book I’ve ever read.

Highly recommend!
I would recommend this book to novice home bakers, sourdough bread evangelists, and anyone who loves quality Danish bakeries like Hart.I adore this book because Richard’s passion and love for his craft jump off the pages. You immediately want to try all his recipes. My first bake was the everyday rye bread. I’ve baked rye before, but this was hands down the best. It was so tasty and the crumb was so soft and moist. Family and friends said “it looks like real rye bread”.Richard also shares some of his best tips, and his intuitive approach to bread baking is truly admirable and inspiring. We need more of that in the community.Buy this book for yourself or give it to someone you love.
