Easy-to-use and powerful scanner
This review is of the VIDENT iSmartDiag510 Wireless OBD2 Scanner. I bought this scanner to keep in my primary car, as well as to take on trips in case anything happens when I’m on the road.I am a DIY’er that likes to perform my own repairs as often as possible. I also like to be informed to ‘keep mechanics honest’ for the times when I must take my car to a shop. One of the key reasons I chose the Vident OBD2 was the availability of current and future updates without any subscription fees. The subscription fees I saw on many other scanners make them unaffordable for my casual home use needs. The other big reason was the bi-directional capabilities to allow me to reset my oil light after servicing as well as more advanced operations such as ABS bleeding (I do my own brake work), throttle relearn (when replacing a TPS), steering angle sensor, and more. Previously I had to borrow a friend’s much pricier OBD2 tool to perform these operations, so the ability to be perform these whenever I have the need is worth WAY more than the modest price of this tool to me.After receiving the tool, I found it very easy to download the appropriate datasets for my cars (Honda Pilot, CRV, and Volvo S80), and quickly get the tool connected to each car and my phone. The user interface was very intuitive and conveniently allowed me to perform a full diagnostic scan of each car. At the end of each scan, the results for each module tested were displayed the ability to email the scan report to myself (or a friend, or mechanic if needed) was very helpful, allowing me to research any issues using my phone or laptop in the comfort of my home. Both of my Honda’s are newer models, and unsurprisingly no faults were found on either vehicle. The 2004 Volvo; however, was another story. Even in the absence of any warning lights on the dash, the scan tool found faults in several modules in the car; and I emailed the status report to myself so I can determine if these are ‘non-issues’, or something that may cause trouble ahead. In conclusion, I am VERY PLEASED with purchase of the Vident OBD2 scanner. It is a very powerful little tool, than can be continuously updated for use with cars I own now, and in the future (without any additional costs), and it’s portable size and ease of operation allow me to take it with me anywhere I travel and have peace of mind should a warning light show up when driving.

Solid bi-directional scan tool
This a review from a DIYer, not a professional mechanic. I own a popular $100 Bluetooth OBD2 code reader and a $500 hard wired tablet sized bi-directional scanner. Both tools have their strengths, but as most folks realize, bi-directional control is essential for proper diagnosis for many components in modern vehicles. Everything from blend doors, to instrument cluster gauge sweeps, to fuel pumps, to EVAP vent solenoids. You must have the ability to actuate/test these items. As a DIYer, having professional level screen size/graphing or programming functionality aren’t very important, as the Vident is not a daily use device for me. The Bluetooth feature, however, is practically necessary for bi-directional testing. Tough to perform many of the tests constrained to the drivers seat (using a corded scan tool).Let’s start with the unboxing. It took only a few minutes to download the Android app, install, create an account, register and activate the device. Not bad. It took another 45 minutes to update all of the software and firmware (Almost every manufacturer was shown as an available update). Hopefully, this will be much quicker in the future.First looks. The device pairs easily enough with my Motorola G7 phone. The display menus are laid out well. It would be nice to have a “Saved” or “Favorites” manufacturer’s category. OBD2 or OE scans are fairly straight forward, but see comments below. The full scan diagnostic report is simple, easy to read, and can be saved or emailed as a PDF.Pros:• $100 bi-directional tool with Bluetooth capability, amazing!• Auto-IDs both of my vehicles (2002 Montana, 2015 Impreza)• Special functions (actuation tests) are fairly robust, and display pertinent live data during the tests.• Lifetime software updates. This alone, is worth the purchase price.Cons:• No full system auto scan available for my 2002 Montana. You must choose the individual module to scan for DTCs. Contacted tech support via the bug reporting form in the app. They responded that this feature is currently not available for that particular vehicle.• Combined graph is limited to 4 PIDs. Understandable, since this runs on a small mobile phone screen. Selected individual graphs can be displayed in greater number. The screen can only display three at a time, but you can swipe up or down to scroll through them all.• Somewhat slower refresh/communication rate versus my hard wired scanner. This is very evident during graphing of live data (choppy lines), and a full system autoscan (up to 3 minutes to complete).• The progress of the autoscan is difficult to track. The screen cycles from one that shows the current module being scanned with a progress bar, to a screen with “-Please wait-” with no progress bar. Makes it difficult to know where you are in the full autoscan process. Tech support said this would be addressed in future software updates.Overall, I am very pleased with the features this product provides. It is a definite step up from the Bluetooth dongle I currently own. Solid 4 stars, maybe 4.5 considering the price and features, but I think there’s room for improvement. Tech support responds within 24 hours to complaint submissions, which is good to see, makes you think the company is focused on customer satisfaction. For someone who does weekend oil changes and repairs, the iSmartDiag510 has plenty of features and provides ample live data and testing to get you started toward a proper diagnosis.
