A great book but be aware of hardback size!
I am sure it probably says in the description, but be aware of the size of this book if you buy as a hardback - it is not typical hardback size but rather almost like a typical paperback size.

Charming And Whimsical
I want a librarian like Mrs Komachi! I absolutely loved her character. She feels real to me but also so magical, with her felted objects and wisdom and honeydome cookie box. And the tassel in her hair. Somehow she is so Japanese—I see her visually very clearly. .I loved this book and as others have said, I think it is the kind you can read more than once. All the stories are gentle, almost like a lullaby. It even has a list iof the books Mrs K recommended in the back, for further exploration.Libraries are one of humanity’s best inventions. Long may they live.

Lovely uplifting read with a wider message
As a librarian myself, I have to say I loved this book! There’s something about being able to provide a source or piece of knowledge that makes something click for someone, or makes them think differently about something, that I love. Some other reviews mentioned that the personal growth, which many of the main characters undergo, happens overnight. While I think this is true, there’s a wider societal point here. Public libraries are one of the last places everyone is welcome. People can learn computer skills, join a book club, attend events, and read the literature from all over the world, all for free. They are warm, safe places to people of all ages and from all walks of life. But they’re also one of the first places to have services cut, or closed completely, when finances are tight. The economic and social benefits of libraries are vast, and although perhaps this book might have been slightly simplistic in its approach, those benefits were cleverly presented - intangible and yet most assuredly present. I didn’t enjoy the fatphobic descriptions of the librarian, but I can at least say the characters in the book very quickly realised that she was more than capable with her uncanny insight, so her appearance was irrelevant to what she could offer society. I enjoyed the short story format and how each one stood alone but also intertwined with the others. It was an uplifting read and I would definitely recommend it.

A cleansing read
In what appears to be the popular tone for Japanese literature, "What you are looking for" is a soft, almost meditative read that follows five "lost" individuals in Tokyo. By various means, they end up at a local community center, standing in front of the dominant figure there: the librarian. She takes up space, works on her felting, and gives book recommendations. Most of the recommendations align with what you asked for, but one does not. This outlining recommendation is almost silly for how farfetched it is, and perhaps it is the strangeness of the recommendation that has out-lost heroes gravitating toward those pages. What does it mean? What is the librarian trying to tell me?I wish I knew more about Japanese culture and lore because I believe the reference librarian has to be symbolic of a god-like figure or an oracle in a tradition with which I'm not familiar. This is an enjoyable, leisurely read.
