The amplitude of vibration produced by an object such as a speaker driver is proportional to the change of pressure generated as the wave moves through the medium which surrounds it (such as air). Therefore, the amplitude of a sound wave is commonly measured by its pressure level. The decibel is a non-dimensional, logarithmic scale to denote a relative change in the strength of a signal or wave. When placed in the context of sound pressure level; it measures the nominal threshold of human hearing, relative to the quietest sound audible to the human ear. The frequency of instances where a sound wave reaches its peak during a period of time is measured in Hz (hertz). This is the number of complete cycles per second. Human hearing is limited to frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. Sensitivity and impedance Earphone sensitivity is measured in Sound Pressure Level (SPL). This is essentially a measurement of how loud or easily driven a pair of earphones is. The sensitivity is also influenced by the drivers’ coil impedance which varies over the frequency range. The higher the SPL and the lower the impedance the more easily driven your earphones will be. decent sound, good build quality
My headphones are rarely off my head and hence I can justify spending good money on a quality pair and appreciate the difference. Oddly enough, it seems that the cheap ones last but dont sound good and all too often the expensive ones sound great but dont last. In the past year alone I have had 2 pairs of Beats Tour and a pair of Soul SL49s break on me, issues with control button, Y joint in cable and joint on the 3.5mm jack. The beats sound terrific and fit well, the earpiece seems to be solid metal (alloy) and they fit well. However, you only have to look at the cable joints and button to be suspicious about how easily they can break - no mouldings just flimsy plastic covers on the joints. The Soul SL49s looked better, particularly the control button, but my pair developed a fault on the 3.5mm jack in less than 2 weeks, decided to go for a refund and I cant see a new pair fairing any better. Decided to replace them with a-Jays Four as I bought some for my son at xmas and was quite impressed with the look and sound of them.OK, so Ive had my a-Jays Fours only a few days, but after several hours use its clear that the sound isnt on par with the Beats or Soul, but its entirely decent and very pleasing unless you crank up the volume too much and then the bass goes into distortion. The ear-pieces are plastic, but fit my ears OK and I particularly like that they sit flush with my ears, very neat looking and I can wear them under my crash helmet of whilst lay in bed and they are still comfortable, unlike many others. The best thing about the a-Jays is the quality of the cable and construction/joints. The flat cable is just like Beats Tour which I personally like. The rubberised plastic mouldings around the 3.5mm jack and Y joint seem very robust, cant imagine any issues there. The control buttons / mic looks similarly robust. Cant quite tell how robust the cable joints to the earpieces is, so only time will tell, but it seems to me that these are made in higher volume than the Beats and hence the tooling and processes for manufacturing are better engineered, IMO.So it seems that if you want your headphones to last, dont spend too much £, go for a middle of the road price and you might just get a decent sound with build quality to last. These are good value for money IMO, I would give 5 stars for design and build quality, but 4 stars because sound isnt top shelf, leaves room for improvement, but at the money, Im not sure you can do much better...

Good sound, weak build.
UPDATE: These phones began to show some wear within weeks of use. Be aware that the white cables will get stained by jeans and any other clothing that runs. The connector at source is also quite fragile and any twisting or movement in it results in crackles whilst listening to music - most annoying. The controls have also weakened and button presses must be firm.I wouldn't recommended buying these anymore, but their sound does retain a 3-star rating.----I have had a number of earphones over the last few years, and these are certainly one of the better pairs. For the last two years I have used Apple's in-ear headphones and they've been more then adequate, but adequate at best. The a-Jays Four feel like a breath of fresh air after just two weeks. The new a-Jays Four are not my first phones from Jays. I previously had a pair of q-Jays. These were the worst headphones I have ever owned, and after purchasing them for £150, they were duly sold (at great loss) on an online auction site. The new a-Jays were a gamble to me based on my previous experience, but I'm thankful to say they are a great step for Jays to have made. These phones don't require silly extra cable attachments, no shirt clips, they have a great in-line mic/remote and fantastic tangle-free cables (which genuinely work). The mic works incredibly well, and the remote is not so small that it is fiddly to use. The 90º headphone jack is a must for all pocketable devices, and they're comfortable wear for long periods. If I had to find issue with them, I would say they need a case; need to be about 15cm shorter (I'm 6"1' but find them a wee bit too long); and, could do with less chunky connectors. The only fault I have found with my pair is that the headphone connector will emit white noise when jiggled with. I have to actively move it to produce this though, and it has not happened in practice. They're the perfect partner for an iPhone, iPod Touch, etc.

Great sound, bad build quality
I found these after searching high and low for a pair of well priced in-ear headphones, with a remote and microphone for my iPhone.I have been very happy with the headphones as such. Audio is quite good, they don't tangle very much, great ambient noise reduction, and remote working is expected. Fitted my ears nicely, and stays in, but I never seem to have trouble with in-ear phones no matter the brand, so no surprise there. So 5 stars for that. The build quality seems quite good, and thus I was surprised after 3 months of use, that they started making scratching sounds whenever the cable was being touched even slightly, and slowly the remote also stopped working. 1 month later the remote didn't work, one earplug didn't have audio. I normally take really good care of my things, so it wasn't due to mishandling.Amazons homepage said I should contact the manufacturer, but the manufacturers homepage said I should contact the seller, so what gives? I ended up contacting Amazons customer service, which referred me to the manufacturer, so I contacted them. They told me to send in the headphones, which I did, and 3 weeks later a new pair showed up on my door step, so far so good, although I think its stupid the seller or manufacturer refers to each other on their respective websites.Loved my new head phones, until 3 months later... The scratching sounds have returned.. So apparently the build quality isn't as good as it seems. I expect these to quit working in a month or so, so I'll be looking for another product in the mean time. I wouldn't recommend getting them until they have fixed this problem. A pity, I really liked them though. And the price have increased 60% here on Amazon since I bought my pair 10 months ago!
