I mainly use cardamom pods in cooking Indian dishes or making chai. These pods smelled amazing when I removed the lid from the jar and they looked fresh (whole, proper color, no odd wrinkling). I found that they imparted a potent flavor in tea in particular (since it is steeped in a relatively small amount of liquid). One pod was enough for tea. In curry, I used about four and it worked well.
