I recently tried out this handheld RFID writer, and overall, it does exactly what it promises with surprising simplicity. The compact design makes it easy to hold, and the labeled buttons (Read/Write) keep the operation straightforward. The LED indicators (Power, Pass, Busy) are helpful for knowing the device status at a glance. Functionally, it reads and writes RFID cards/fobs quickly, making it a handy tool for duplicating access cards when you have permission. It’s portable, lightweight, and requires no complicated setup — perfect for someone who just wants a basic RFID cloning device without needing advanced technical knowledge. On the downside, the plastic housing feels a bit cheap, and the build quality isn’t the most rugged. It seems more suited for occasional use rather than heavy-duty, professional applications. Additionally, it only supports certain frequency ranges (typically 125kHz for devices like this), so it won’t work for all RFID cards. Pros: • Easy to use, simple button layout • Clear LED indicators • Portable and lightweight • Affordable compared to larger RFID writers Cons: • Build quality feels basic • Limited to certain RFID frequencies • Not designed for high-security or professional environments Verdict: If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, easy-to-use RFID writer for cloning low-frequency tags, this device is a good pick. It’s not the most durable or versatile option out there, but it gets the job done for simple tasks.

Use the red "*" button at the bottom to cycle through options on the screen (it's not a touch screen). You don't really HAVE to do that---you can just use the read/write buttons for simple cloning. I didn't do that---just put a key fob badge under it and clicked the "Read" button. It failed a couple times, but I moved the fob around a little and then flipped it over and it read it. Then I did the same with "Write" button and one of the blank fobs they included. IT WORKED!!!! Then to clear the test fob I hit "Write", but didn't have the fob near it, then I typed "0000000" and then put the test fob up to it and hit "Write" again and it overwrote "00000" as the number. (We didn't want a second, usable fob floating around since this was just a test). The box and soft insert this came in was MUCH nicer than the one my Samsung phone came in, LOL! The pamphlet that comes with it mentions an "ODG" adapter---it's not, it's just a USB to USB C adapter, which is stuck on a regular USB to USB C cord. Nice of them, but all I could do was charge this device by plugging it into my phone--which is pretty cool if you don't use it often and don't want to find a wall outlet to charge this thing up in a hurry from. Maybe there is ODG possible---I don't know (***it works, just plug into Windows computer). I have over half a dozen devices like this (including the Zero Flipper) and this is probably the 3rd nicest. The build quality: it feels and looks nice in the hand too. Ease of use was easy. Immense value for the money: so many features to play with, but you can just read/write button it for simplicity. There are a zillion different types of RFID protocols out there---so you WILL need multiple devices with different frequencies/protocols for playing around. TIP: screen cap and print out the specs listed for all your RFID devices and make a nice binder--it'll make it easier to flip through and choose a device which stands a better chance of working (if you happen to know what protocol/frequency the tags you're trying to read/write actually are). ****UPDATE: you can plug this into a Windows computer (any usb cable works) and it will OTG--once you download the software. Go to the website on the pamphlet and go to X7 and there will be a LONG instruction PDF and a couple versions of the software. I downloaded the latest (2025) updated software and it worked. YOU MUST CHOOSE TO READ either the regular type of card--or on the upper right a HID card. If you get an error "reading failed" just click on the OTHER "read card" button.

Terrible software, useless instructions and froze. They barely attempted to translate the manual from Chinese to English. It is very difficult to read and the user interface is non intuitive. After several attempts, I think I read my FOB, but then the device froze and I was unable to proceed. It cannot be reset, unplugging/plugging did nothing, etc. It will be returned.

It bridges the gap between those dirt-cheap, blind blue handheld duplicators and high-end cybersecurity tools like a Proxmark3 or a Flipper Zero. ​However, it is far from perfect. If you’re dealing with modern, heavily encrypted access control systems, this device will likely frustrate you. ​The Breakdown ​1. Hardware & Ease of Use (4/5) ​The physical design of the device is actually quite good for the price. ​Stand-Alone Operation: Unlike a lot of cheap readers, you don't need a computer or a phone just to copy a basic tag. It features a bright 2.8-inch TFT color screen and a physical number pad. You place your original card against the back of the device, hit the blue Read button, swap out the original tag for a blank writable tag, and hit the orange Write button. The loud voice prompt tells you exactly when the clone is successful. ​Battery: It uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery via USB-C, which is a massive upgrade over older models that chewed through AAA batteries. ​2. Frequency & Compatibility (4/5) ​The X7 boasts excellent dual-frequency coverage. It handles traditional low-frequency ID cards (125KHz all the way up to 1000KHz) and high-frequency IC cards (13.56MHz / NFC). It can read and write standard formats like EM4100, MIFARE Classic (S50/S70), HID Prox, and it can even program NTAG213/215 chips (great if you make your own Amiibos). ​3. Decryption & Software (2.5/5) ​This is where the device drops the ball, and it's the main reason people leave 1-star reviews. If your 13.56MHz card has encrypted sectors (common with modern apartment complexes or high-security office buildings), the standalone machine will fail and prompt you to decode online. ​The PC Software: When you plug the device into a Windows computer, it acts like a flash drive containing a built-in decoding program. The software can crack basic MIFARE Classic nested encryption through a brute-force attack, but the user interface feels incredibly dated, and your computer's antivirus will almost certainly flag the .exe file as a false positive, which can be sketchy for casual users. Note: The software does not support macOS. ​The Android App: Supposedly, you can link it to an Android phone via an OTG adapter to decode data on the go, but the app is highly unstable, prone to random crashing, and lacks smooth English localization. ​4. The "Fake Success" Trap (2/5) ​A common issue with the X7 is the false positive. You might run an encrypted card through the software, click write, and the machine will loudly proclaim "Card writing successful!" But when you take your newly minted fob to your apartment gate, nothing happens. This occurs because the X7 can easily copy the public UID (the card's identification number) but fails to crack or copy the actual encrypted data blocks required by the reader to grant access. The Verdict: If you just need a straightforward, cheap tool to duplicate simple, older-generation 125KHz fobs or standard unencrypted MIFARE 1K cards, the XIXEI X7 is incredibly convenient and gets the job done in seconds. ​However, if you are trying to clone a highly secure, modern apartment complex fob or advanced commercial access badges, save your money. The software isn't powerful enough to crack advanced security protocols, and you’ll be much better off investing in a more advanced tool like a Proxmark3 clone.

Zero issues out of the box. I was going to order the more expensive version of this writer since many comments stated that to write to keyfobs, you would need a Windows computer for this version but I had no issue if it came to that. - - - - This worked straight on the device. Was able to read from a 1346 key fob for my building, and then it told me what batch to grab (which is labeled on the zip lock bags). First copy wrote write away. My second copy had issues and I thought it must've been a one-off success, though I had to angle the new fob just a tiny bit, sometimes centering it didn't work. Anyway, this worked on all of the fobs I made. - - - - Simple to use. Power on, READ the item, WRITE to new item. Done - you will either get an error or success notification.

Doesn’t work exactly how it’s supposed to. A lot of of the items that you have to copy need decoding which it does not do natively on the device which defeats the entire purpose. Also some of the functions on the device don’t even work.

It Works

I was a little skeptical at first, but this device really does what it claims. The setup was simple, the screen is bright, and the menus are easy to navigate. It reads cards quickly and the connection to the PC software (windows 64x) was smoother than I expected. Once connected, it handled the more advanced functions without any issues. The build quality feels solid for the price, and the battery life is better than I thought it would be. Overall, it’s a very handy tool and definitely worth it if you need something reliable that just works. Highly recommended!
