I've been aware of Mandy Moore since I first hunted down the song Cry from the film 'A Walk To Remember'. I was very excited about the album Coverage and liked Wild Hope -- even if it wasn't as well done as the former. Amanda Leigh offers a continuation of both these albums sound with a more mature edge: that breezy, blusey, folkish rock -- a modern 70's esque sound. I personally loved it and after a few listens I began to pick out what are some very strong songs; what's nice about this album is that it actually sounds like an 'album'; with the songs flowing from one to the other without jarring. There's a wholistic vibe to it as an artistic work. Merrimack River -- A soothing, blues type slow number. It's a nice way to begin the album; indicating the general flavour of music that follows. 7/10 Fern Dell -- A catchy, guitar song with beautifully atmospheric music. It also builds up to a fantastic finish. 10/10 I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week -- This is the first single. I'm not sure about that choice, but out of all of the songs on this album I can see why it was chosen, it seems slighty more 'mainstream' and middle of the road than the others. Actually it's probably something that wouldn't have been out of place on Wild Hope. 8/10 Pocket Philosopher -- A sunny, and upbeat track. This song took a while to grown on me, but grown on me it did! Ironically it was the verses that had me first; indeed I like them more than the chorus. I have a feeling this one will be utterly underrated. 10/10 Song About Home -- Slow and steady. That basically sums up this number -- not my favourite track; probably one that'll need more listening to. 7/10 Everblue -- One of my favourite songs on the album. Everblue is a slow song, along the lines of a ballard. Mandy's voice sounds fantastic on it, as does the accompaniment and I like the melancholy tone to it. 10/10 Love to Love Me Back -- I like this song very much. It's kind of middle of road, a slower fare than I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week but has nice lyrics and tempo. 8/10 Indian Summer -- A ballard along the lines of Mona Lisa's and Madhatters that has awesome music that swells beautifully. A song expressing a past event. I wish it had been longer. 10/10 Nothing Everything -- My favourite song on the album. Another "catchy" one but in a far less obvious way than Fern Dell; the accompaning music and background vocals adds tremendously to the piece. It tends to get stuck in my head (in a good way!). It has a slightly melancholy tinge to it without being depressing. 10/10 Bug -- I love this song! I also wish it had been longer. It's very folky with the tinkling guitar and intimate acoustic feel; it also serves as a lovely way to close a very strong offering from Moore. 10/10 Highly recommended.
