Glucose strip inconvenient to use
I have been using Johnsons life scan glucometer for over 25 years. The glucometer had a lifetime warranty and I used to get periodic replacement under warranty. On September 2nd 2024, I bought an Accuchek Active glucometer. It's a good brand and I liked it. But it has a very serious drawback. Application of blood sample to the strip is inconvenient. This results in error and the strip gets wasted. Hence returning the instrument.

Overall good
I’ve been using the Accu-Chek glucose monitoring machine for a few weeks now, and overall, I’m quite satisfied with its performance.Accurate Readings: The machine provides quick and reliable results. I cross-checked with lab results, and the accuracy was impressive.User-Friendly Design: Very easy to use—even for elderly family members. The buttons are simple, and the display is clear.Compact & Portable: Small and lightweight, perfect for carrying while traveling.Fast Results: Shows blood glucose levels within 5 seconds.Memory Storage: It stores previous readings, which helps in tracking trends over time.

A bit complicated to use
As a medical provider in a hospital I use glucomters all the time. I purchased this for a family member. It is nice and compact with carry case that has storage. Directions are easy to follow but the actual equipment is designed poorly. The lancet pen tends to misfire and often jams at the lid when loading. The machine makes you put a test strip in then take it out to collect blood and return it. I’ve timed it and it only gives you 10 seconds to remove the strip, collect blood, and reinsert strip. To do this you must prick your finger, prepare a blood sample, then insert the strip, remove, collect blood, and reinsert. For most people it requires another person to help. Also, because the blood collection area is in the middle of the strip the actual meter gets blood on the sensor and case every time you remove the bloody strip. This is an infection risk. The lancets and strips are very easy to get even at local pharmacies, however no one carries the glucose testing solutions- not even online I am finding. You are required to run a control test every time you open a new bottle of strips or if you question a result. That is the only way to ensure your results are accurate, however this is set up to make you run blood sugars without verifying the results are correct. This is very dangerous. For some people this machine works well, however I am purchasing a different more user friendly machine to use.

Accu-Chek Active Blood Glucose Meter Kit, Vial of 10 strips - consistently low reading
Let me start by giving this device 5-Stars for its good looks and brand name. From the above, I deduct 2 stars for lack of accuracy. What do I mean? Let me explain. You see, every alternate day, I was doing fasting sugar test with this device. Looking at the good results, the doctor reduced the diabetes medication dosage.Within days, my body was indicating that something was wrong. All this while however, the Accu-Check continued to show that my fasting sugar was more-or-less okay (for a diabetic). So, I went back to the doctor and he rightly suspected that the meter was giving bad readings. He prescribed two lab tests on two different days and told me to do a test with the Accu-Check at the same time as the lab took the blood sample. In both cases, the lad reading was roughly 35 mg/dl higher than that indicated by this Accu-check meter. In fact, I have an older Accu-check version that required a chip. When I tested my sugar levels with the older Accu-check meter, it too displayed a reading that was 30 mg/dl higher than the new meter. Obviously these no-chip glucometers are not as accurate as we are made to believe. At best, they only give a rough indication of the sugar level and cannot be used as a basis on which to change medication dosage. It seems glucometer reading that is off by 15% of the lab results should be considered accurate. But in this case, it was off by more than 30%.Of the remaining 3-Stars, I deduct another 2 stars for error reading. Let me explain.Very often after putting a drop of blood on the test strip (while it is in the meter), the Accu-Check meter would display an error. Result; wasted test strips and we all know how expensive these things are. Now, I'm not new to using the glucometer. I've been using the previous chip based glucometer for three years. So, yes, I know how to do the test. The number of times it displayed such errors, indicates to me something is seriously not right with this meter. So finally, we are left with just one star (I wish I could knock that off too). Should you buy this product? I'm sorry, but I have to say absolutely not !!!!
