Fundamentals of Musical Composition

Highly detailed with an abundance of specific examples
It's a very advanced book for understanding composition and compositional structures. It addresses everything that I wanted and goes into great detail. Moreover I would say that it has an abundance of examples towards the end of the book becomes a bit of slogg to get through if attempting to read through the book in its entirety, which I did at first. The best way to read this book is to read the theory and a few illustrations and then to skip past them; Come back to them at a later date, when wanting to study them in more detail.

Great!
As usual, it arrived in excellent condition and on time. I haven't been able to read it just yet, but this is definitely a book to buy, if you're studying music theory - even if on just a beginner's level. It contains the basics that you need to know, if you want to become a great composer - as the title says. It's also a "classic", when it comes to this kind of music literature.

My knowledge of music theory being quite limited, I found this book quite hard to read. However, it is very interesting, well explained and with a lot of examples to illustrate the different points the author makes.

A Must for Music Students
A fantastic book, in excellent condition. It arrived promptly, and has been of great use to me. Written in a coherent, easily understandable manner, with clear and well organised examples, Shonberg's book is a handy guide through the form and analysis of music, as well as its composition.

Exactly what I hoped it would be.
Very inspiring book. The idea of taking a small musical phrase and expanding it to form a larger structures is what I wanted to learn from this book about. Using it now with a couple of my students.

This book is overly wordy and repetitive. Schoenberg attempts to articulate the 'fundamentals of musical composition', but unfortunately fails to deliver. I managed to finish reading the whole book but it was hard going! Sorry Schoenberg, I disagree with some of what you have written, compositions don't just magically appear as an entire entity before a composers eyes, most composers need to work and rework their material in order to refine it.
