It's all you need for basic sharpening, and then use a strop to eliminate the burr. It's held up great, there are other better stones for two, three or more times the price, some single sided. I don't think the 1200 side is a perfect 1200 grit, likely there are larger particles embedded. Shavings, swarf is easily wiped away with a paper towel. I recommend a base, I was able to hollow out the side of a 2x4 the length of the stone. Also good to place on something grippy, like silicone drink coasters. If you need more aggressive shaping, get another one with a coarser grit. Has pretty good feedback for when you're aligned at the correct angle.
