Colm Tóibín – Long Island (2024) (Grasset) 3* Voici la suite (parution 2024) de Brooklyn (parution 2009). L’héroïne, Eilis Lacey, a 20 ans de plus, 2 enfants et un mari dont elle envisage de divorcer. Pour réfléchir, elle rentre dans son Irlande natale, et y retrouve son amour de jeunesse, Jim Farrell. Les mœurs du village n’ont guère évolué. Entre commérages en boutiques, retenues à l’église et soirées arrosées aux pubs, le désir amoureux et son corollaire adultère livrent bataille pendant 400 pages de tergiversations dignes des années 70. Ce deuxième volet est plus intéressant que le premier, mais je reste encore sur ma faim. Les deux personnages principaux sont enferrés dans leurs projections, et aucune réelle confrontation ne leur permet de sortir du corner de préjugés dans lequel les a placés l’auteur depuis le début. Ils ne semblent pas évoluer, mais stagner comme dociles aux événements qui les tiraillent pourtant. Seul le personnage secondaire de Nancy sort du lot. Veuve, meilleure amie et femme trompée, elle ne manque ni de courage, ni d’audace. (déc 2024)
