A Handbook of this Period
Good survey of this period. Focused not verbose. A reminder where a lot of the chaos came from which we are dealing with today.

Many "Facts" Totally Wrong. Ruins the Book.
This book has many positive reviews, but those reviewers must not have read the same book I did. This book is filled with inaccurate statements concerning facts, which is the worst thing that can happen in a history book. A few inaccurate facts can be expected, even in a well edited book on history, but the inaccurate statements herein throw the entire book into doubt. In location 2627 the book states that the Poles used cavalry charges against German tanks. Many historians have shown this to be an erroneous statement. There is zero evidence that the Polish Army ever ordered a cavalry charge against German tanks. This appears to be a false story made up by someone to show how incompetent the Polish Army was fighting the Germans.Location 2721 the author states the delay in invading the USSR was caused by the campaign to conquer Greece etc. This is false. The German generals themselves state that the weather caused the delay and nothing else. Studies by historians show that the weather in Russia prior to June 22 would have delayed an armored attack. There is no doubt that the generals are correct. The statement in this book that the attack to the south "may well have delayed his attack on Russia" in false. In location 2805 this book makes a horrible mistake in stating that General MacArthur was in charge of the Pacific war. HE WAS NOT. HE WAS IN CONTROL OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC, NIMITIZ WAS IN CHARGE OF THE CENTRAL AND NORTHERN PACIFIC. This is much more than a mere error in fact. This shows the author completely misunderstands the command structure of the US forces fighting in the Pacific. In location 2820 the book states that the British landings in North Africa took place after the battle of El Alamein. Wrong again. The British AND AMERICANS landed in western North Africa. The book fails to mention the Americans were part of the landings, and in fact the Americans were the largest part. Also, this book states that the Battle of El Alamein won North Africa for the Allies and that is not true. The Battle of El Alamein [there were actually three of them] destroyed the Afrika Korps, but Rommel managed a retreat that saved the remainder of his army, and his army was reinforced as it retreated to Tunisa. Thereafter, it took an effort from the west and the east to finish the destruction of the German and Italian forces in Tunisa. It was actually the landings on the western coast of north Africa that allowed the allied victory some months later. So, wrong again. In location 3685 the author states that the missiles in Cuba really didn't make much difference since the missiles in the Soviet Union could reach the mainland US anyway. WRONG IN THE EXTREME. The author doesn't understand the importance of distance or how a military advantage can be gained by having missiles in Cuba. The ICBMs in Russia take a lot more time to reach the US than missiles placed in Cuba. Missiles fired from the USSR can take up to 30 minutes to hit the US, but missiles fired from Cuba could hit in ten minutes or less. The difference is the time Washington would have to discern that a war had started and to begin firing its own missiles back at the USSR. The missiles fired from Cuba would hit before the US had any time to respond or give out a message to its bases that an attack was underway. To protect the US from a devastating surprise attack, the missiles had to be removed from Cuba. The author could not be more wrong in his analysis of the situation facing President Kennedy.from location 3759 forward the book tells the history of the American involvement in Vietnam, and the author's statements are absolutely misinformed. I was in the military during Vietnam flying helicopters so my experience there would trump anything he has read by authors who are quite biased. Anything written by someone working for a US News organization about Vietnam will be filled with outright lies. The book "Bright and Shining Lie" is one of the worst. In location 3762 the author says that Ho, the leader of North Vietnam, wasn't a communist at first is an outright lie. Ho was a communist since his days in France and he was trained in subversive activity in Russia. Ho fought the Japanese as a communist and organized his party around communism. Ho was a communist from the beginning of the war in Vietnam against the French and remained a communist until he died. After Ho took over North Vietnam, he had every capitalist shot. That included shop owners and landowners. Anyone associating with capitalist system was executed. The author states at location 3762 that a rebellion broke out in South Vietnam against the corrupt government and the North sent aid to the rebels. That is outright communist propaganda without any foundation. In fact, Ho and his regime were sending troops and material south to fight the government in South Vietnam even before the split took place in the "peace" conference. The organized fighters he had in the South from fighting the Japanese and French remained there to fight another war if the elections were not held or if they lost the elections. The outcome of the elections called for in the peace conference meant nothing to the communist.Location 3763 again misstates the Vietnam War context in that the communist invaded South Vietnam to overthrow the government and establish a communist government over all of Vietnam. In the final attack on South Vietnam in 1975 the North attacked with hundreds of tanks, artillery pieces, and other heavy weapons. It was a Korean style invasion of conquest, and they were up against a South Vietnamese army abandoned by the world. After South Vietnam fell millions of South Vietnamese were imprisoned or killed. The murders went on for years as the communist dug out very one that assisted the South in the war. Millions set out to sea in humanity packed small boats to escape the terror of the communist in Vietnam. Many thousands were picked up at sea and many others made it to Australia. The numbers who died at sea fleeing communist terror in Vietnam is unknown, but certainly in the hundreds of thousands. The author's treatment of these horrible events is less than enlightening.Another horrible error occurs when the author lets LBJ off the hook for causing the Vietnam War. LBJ went to the Congress and lied to obtain the Tonkin Gulf Resolution that gave him [Johnson] a free hand in running the war. If Johnson was trying to avoid a war, why lie to Congress to get it? After Johnson got his war, he took over control and micromanaged the war in a totally incompetent way. If Johnson would have followed the recommendations of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we would not have entered the Vietnam War beyond sending advisors because the nation was totally corrupt, and the government had little support. Several other recommendations were made but never followed by Johnson. Johnson was the cause of the Vietnam War as we knew it, and no one else.In location 4008 the author pulls a complete dodge. He states "... unleash an offensive in February 1968 which captured something like 80 percent of all towns and villages." He is talking about the Tet Offensive which did not capture 80 percent of anything. One regional capital, a big one, at Hue, but otherwise the attacks took place at perhaps 80 percent of the towns and cities, but they succeeded nowhere. THE TET OFFENSIVE WAS A TOTAL AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE VICTORY. TOTAL. BUT THE US PRESS REPORTED THE OFFENSIVE WAS A TOTAL US DEFEAT! NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF US JOURNALISM WAS SUCH A HUGE LIE PUT OFF ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THAT LIE ENDED THE US COMMITTMENT TO DEFEND VIETNAM ANY FURTHER. After the Tet Offensive the North had lost several of its regular units and they could not resume combat operations for months. The irregular units that had been working in South Vietnam were completely destroyed. They would have to work for years to restore those organizations. And the number of South Vietnamese slaughtered by the North while they held control of any area was enormous. In the provincial capital of Hue, they murdered college professors, store owners, and others that might be supporting the present government. There is more, so much more. But the book is not worth buying. The author has a leftist orientation that shows throughout the book and infects every line of thought. Nonetheless, even a leftist has to get the facts right. But he didn't.DO NOT BUY. NOT WORTH THE MONEY.AD2 Author of THE SUPPER SUMMARY OF WESTERN HISTORY

Are you really serious to acquire the knowledge of the entire world ??
Oh Boy, this book is heck of an encyclopedia of world history... I can't say a must read, but you won't regret buying it or reading it... you can relate some hit movies based on history or wars like Pearl Harbour, Munich, Little Boy and many many more... everything... every-single-fucking thing is so nicely illustrated by the author, you will start loving history like anything.... price is little higher compared to the other ones... but so is the content mere bhai.... this is a bit bulky book of exactly 700 pages... but you can complete it in 45-60 days reading an hour a day...knowledge seekers can read it chapter wise... civil service aspirants may need to read selective chapters... but I don't think a civil service aspirant will leave any chapter... because every content is so deliberately meant to steal your attention...... read it... read it.. read it.... best of luck for June 18... 😀😀
