Roar Uthaug directs this action adventure reboot of the popular computer game starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. Following the disappearance of her father Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West), Lara inherits his estate and stumbles upon his work on the mythical Queen of Yamatai, Himiko, who was said to have held ultimate power over life and death. In search of answers, Lara enlists the help of Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), captain of the ship Endurance, to sail to the island believed to have been Yamatai. After a violent storm wrecks their ship, Lara finds herself on the mythical island where she becomes embroiled in a fight against archaeologist Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins), who has taken over the island along with members of the shadowy organisation Trinity as they also investigate the legend of Himiko, but with more sinister intentions in mind to harness her great power... Review: A GOOD FILM TO WATCH VERY ENTERTAINING - THIS WAS A GREAT FILM. NORMALLY WHEN A FILM IS REDONE IT IS NOT AS GOOD BUT THIS WAS. Review: Enjoyable adventure film - As a fan of the original Angelia Jolie films, I was sceptical about a reboot and how the interpretation would be. Making a film from a source material is never easy, especially when it's based on a computer game; however, with the 2018 version, they nailed it. Alicia Vikander is perfectly cast as Lara Croft, albeit her accent does waver in some scenes. Her physicality, delivery and humour are on point, which adds a sense of realism and grit to the character, and the action and set pieces are thrilling. The cinematography, direction and music score are brilliant, and add to the grandeur and scale of the adventure. Compared to the previous films in the franchise, this film takes a more serious approach, and honestly, it's all the better for it. The by-the-numbers script could've been tighter and the dialogue a little less clunky, but overall it's still enjoyable. Derek Jacobi, Dominic West and Kristin Scott Thomas help bring some gravitas to proceedings. Even if you've never played the video game, like me, the films are hugely enjoyable and entertaining. This Blu-ray version provides excellent sound and picture quality, and the extras are worth a watch, as they go into detail about locations, sets and how they filmed it. Based on this version, I hope Hollywood sees fit to make another instalment. Time will tell.

Absolutely amazing. Best film in a long time!!!
I am a massive fan of Tomb Raider, and this film is brilliant. If you have played the newer Reboot games then this is definitely for you. This is the movie remake of the first of the newer Tomb Raider games, 'Tomb Raider A Survivor is Born, and I can say that they have done a fantastic job. Making a movie from a game is never easy to get right but they nailed it. Alicia makes the perfect Lara Croft in every way. Hey likeness and her acting are second to none. One thing I feel I have to point out to all the reviewers who have slated this film and keep comparing it to the Last Gen Tomb Raider games and Angelina Jolie films (which are also brilliant), need to stop. This movie and the soon to be 3 reboot games are The Next Gen Tomb Raiders and have nothing to do with previous games or movies. This and the reboots are complete new Tomb Raiders, and take a more serious approach. Even if you have not played the newer games I really recommend watching this movie. To me Alicia plays the perfect Lara Croft and I cannot wait for the Rise of the Tomb Raider movie:). 5 out of 5!

Good Movie
I like this movie better than the two previous with Angelina Jolie. Too bad we never got another one movie after this.

Alicia IS Lara! Even with an iffy script! Tons of fun!
First and foremost, Alicia's performance of Lara is incredible; she's captured a side of Lara that Angelina just couldn't've. Physically, she's utterly phenomenal and handles the action set pieces with deft perfection. She's exactly what you want for a younger portrayal of Lara, with a duality between an inner innocence and her inherently outstanding combat and survival skills. And dramatically, she captures the deeper character of Lara, too, with zero rigidity. Absolute 10/10 for Alicia. Direction, lighting, cinematography, location, supporting cast, action sequences were superb, too. The only thing that lets this film down is its script. Now, I'm quite aware this is Tomb Raider, and therefore a video game adaption, and leaky scripts are to be expected. But I really wanted more, given the stellar cast; the plot was dull, hackneyed and nonsensical at times. Maybe I'm asking too much for a video game film, as nobody is expecting an Oscar winning screenplay, but I really think Alicia deserved something more. However I do understand, for a film like this, what's most important is the star and the direction. So maybe I'm being unfair here. Overall, an excellent film. From Alicia's utterly flawless performance, to the edge-of-your-seat action sequences, to the eye-popping cinematic candy, this film is an absolute blast. I would just have liked a more challenging script for the viewer, personally. It needs a sequel!

Irritating
This Tomb Raider reboot sees Alicia Vikander as, how can I put it, a less buxom version of Lara Croft than Angelina Jolie this Lara is more feral and a little more vulnerable. This film has an excellent supporting cast with Derek Jacobi and Kristin Scott Thomas in small roles also good is Dominic West and Daniel Wu so the film has a great cast. Alicia Vikander is a feisty athletic Lara and handles the action well but what lets this film down is not in front of the camera but behind it. I watched this film after watching Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One and the contrast between the way these two films were shot exposes the weaknesses of Tomb Raider. The director Roar Uthaug seems to come from the same school of directing as Michael Bay in that he can't seem to settle on a shot no matter what the pace of the scene there has to be an edit, every scene is shot as if it is an action sequence which means there is no rest for the eye and the film is frenetic when it doesn't need to be. The contrast with someone like Spielberg who knows how to construct a scene and to shoot it cinematically is in marked contrast with the pop video way this film is made. So a film that is let down by the way it is made and that makes it an irritating film to watch despite so much talent in front of the camera.
