Torn Down instantly intrigued me as Robert has given us 16 new remixes of classic tracks, I had to get my hands on it, I queued up early outside a record store on Record Store Day and managed to get my hands on both Mixed Up and Torn Down.I instantly listened to the Torn Down picture disc, whilst downloading the mp3's to add to my iTunes Match, the first 6 tracks are quite impressive, I genuinely enjoy what Robert has done to these songs, especially M & Just One Kiss, but A Night Like This deserved a lot better than the treatment it got, it's quite dull and Like Cockatoo's isn't very interesting either. After a few listens I quite liked Plainsong and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, but Want is awful, the original is one of the few highlights on Wild Mood Swing, and it's now been butchered. Never cared for either Never Enough and Cut Here in their original form and this hasn't changed here.The Last Day of Summer is the highlight on this collection, absolutely beautiful and melancholic, I think I actually prefer it to the album version, Robert has brought those string synths to the front of the mix and concentrated on the most beautiful parts of the song. Definitely recommend this if you're planning on cherry picking these tracks.Lost is okay, but It's Over is atrocious, it just sounds like chaotic noise, no melody, the vocals do not fit the track at all, an unfortunate way to end this collection, and a bad way to represent 4:13 Dream, I was quite hoping for a synthed up, pads blaring number to make up for the lack of synths on 4:13, but oh well.Regarding the Mixed Up Extras, it's great to have those original 12" extended mixes on CD, some of the remixes are better than the remixes which ended up on the main Mixed Up album, such as the extended version of Pictures of You. Let's Go to Bed, Just One Kiss, Boys Don't Cry all great. Some of the left over 1990 remixes towards the end of the disc don't live up to much though, probably why they were left off, although the Red mix of Primary is quite good though.Now the main Mixed Up album, I'm listening to this on vinyl and the audio sounds great, Robert has done a great job remastering this, definitely recommend getting this on vinyl, the tracks really come alive. This disc is worth it for the 12" extended versions of the Disintegration tracks, especially Fascination Street. The Walk, A Forest, Hot Hot Hot, all great too.
