Review: An outstanding product - While I was researching for the most capable (and affordable) Blu-Ray player that would enhance the performance of my LaserTV Projector and ALR screen, the Panasonic DP-UB20EB was the obvious choice. Its 4K high-precision Chroma Processor produces outstanding colours, bringing natural images to the screen. The images are vibrant with exceptional detail, creating a visually immersive experience! I was pleasantly surprised at the rich quality produced by the automatic upscaling of Blu-Ray (HD) content. Even some basic DVD discs resembled high-definition. The player made my projector’s Dolby Atmos sound richer and more captivating than ever before! I was particularly excited about the bass as it is now much clearer and well-defined. Furthermore, the ‘Dialog Enhancer’ feature makes it easier to hear speech without needing to raise the volume too high. Though the player’s Remote Control works well, I replaced it with the Panasonic DP-UB9000 Remote Control (bought separately) as I preferred its layout and it has a backlight for use in a dark room. Admittedly, the Panasonic DP-UB20EB is a considered purchase, if you are on a budget. But after assessing its overall amazing picture and sound quality, upscaling capabilities, HDR processing, and its smooth, uninterrupted playback, I can only conclude that this award-winning product delivers as promised. This beast offers sensational performance and I can confidently recommend it. UPDATE: June 2026 After a year of regular use, I can report that this Blu-ray player is performing exactly as when purchased. For the past six months, I have been watching my collection of nostalgic British detective TV series. Though these were only produced on standard DVDs, the player's processor is able to accurately upscale the colour and sharpness of the on-screen images. The quality is exceptional.
Review: Panasonic A Must For Blu Rays and 4K - I'd finally upgraded to a 4K TV (okay, I always wait till the old one dies) and with this our workhorse Blu Ray player Panasonic DMP-BD75EB-K became obsolete, and I realised I'd had that since November 2011. After reading some online "experts" I went with the Sony UBP-X700 4K, but right away it seemed glitched. First Blu Ray I tried, great picture and sound, but then suddenly the screen went black. Checked the software up date, screen settings, seemed ok. Then it did it again when watching another Blu Ray, it refused to play some at all which was annoying when the XBox would do it, and after several of my wife's films had a nasty blue hue to them, I asked for a refund off desertcart and got it. And so I came back to Panasonic and after a month, it seems like the better choice. Yes, the Sony was £217 on offer and this was over £350, but you have to look at your Blu Ray collection and think "does it deserve the best"? Set up was a doddle, HDMI and internet cable and power lead. It connected with the Yamaha sound system straight off, and not a single glitch since. Picture quality does seem better than the Sony, and sound is off the map - we do have a 7.1 Dolby Atmos system so it's nice to use it! Not sure if we will get another 13 years of service as we did before, but with Blu Rays starting to fall off (Disney will pull them from Australia soon), then there may not be many players around. Apparently this one is five years old, but the tech seems spot on. So, if like me, you do some streaming, but just prefer the quality of a Blu Ray, this is definitely the player to go for.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Has anyone found a way to change the display to full widescreen or am I stuck with 16:9**
A: 16:9 IS full widescreen.

Although aspect ratios are more complicated that this, for your purposes the basic ratios are:

1:33:1 - 4:3
1:78:1 - modern widescreen tv
1:85:1 - traditional 16:9 widescreen
2:35:1 - Cinemascope

If a film was shot in 1:85:1 it will cover the entirety of your screen (although if you look closely you’ll see very slight horizontal black bars at the top and bottom)

If a film was shot in 2:35:1 since it’s a wider ratio than the tv you’ll see much larger horizontal black bars than with 1:85:1 (and this is correct; you should not attempt to change this to fit the screen as it will distort and lose information on the sides)

I’m guessing what you mean by your question is can you fit a 2:35:1 film to fit the entirety of the screen. It may be possible by should never be done for the reasons stated in my last paragraph.

**Q: Can i connect an amazon fire stick to the usb connection on the Panasonic Blu-ray dp-ub820?**
A: Hello,

Thank you for your question and interest in our product.

The USB socket on the DP-UB820 would only be for data storage/playback, therefore an Amazon Fire TV stick which does not actually feature a USB connection but a HDMI connection, would be better connected to a television.

Sincerely,
Your Panasonic Customer Care Team

**Q: can it play 4k ultra hd movies as well as normal blu rays and dvds?**
A: Yes it will play 4k blu Ray's and normal blu ray & dvds

**Q: Is it normal for the player to have very faint clicking sound every so often when watching a movie? it's in a study room, so close to it when playing.**
A: It’s not unusual with some of the cheaper Panasonic players. I have a five year old bdt460, it’s done that from new and still works perfectly. It’s just transport noise from the player accessing the disc. My t180 multi region does it too, but my UB9000 doesn’t. You won’t find a more reliable blu ray player brand though.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Panasonic A Must For Blu Rays and 4K
*by F***R on 13 April 2024*

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Big picture upgrade over my old DP-UB390
*by A***Y on 9 November 2025*

I bought this primarily because I wanted Dolby Vision which my old Panasonic blu-ray player didn't support. It was basically plug-and-play (including not having to reprogramme my universal remote control). Picture quality is much improved and the HDR optimizer works well on HDR10 blu-rays like Apollo 13. It does take a little while to get all the settings dialled in as there are so many more tweaks that you can do on this player. For some reason I had to delay audio by 30ms with my particular setup to get lip sync right; no idea why. {Update] Really impressed with this player having watched a lot of different material. HDR and overall picture quality is way better than anything that I have seen before and sound quality over HDMI is excellent. I can rate it highly. I have an eight year-old LG OLED TV that really benefits from the HDR processing in this player.
