Daily challenges for winter fun
This was tough, but just challenging enough to make it so much fun. We did this as a family, ages 7-40. You can look up hints if you are truly stuck, which was nice. It is interactive and mind struggling. We won't be able to use ours again because we needed to write in it.

The puzzles are decent, but don't count on the clues or "Eli" to help you out if you get stuck.
So yes, this is just a book. It's a book divided into 24 chapters plus a prologue, with each chapter having a puzzle or riddle to solve. The puzzles, so far, are solid enough for an early teen(although they may not be interested in a "saving Christmas" theme"). However, I'm going to give an example of where the QR code system they're using falls flat in actually giving out help, and it shouldn't be a spoiler, I hope.On one day, your character receives both a map and a item. The map is printed in the book, as expected, but the item your character gets, mechanically, becomes a QR code that takes your phone and turns it into a device that can locate certain things by using the camera to scan book pages. This is fine, in theory, but the problem comes when the book doesn't really explain how this is supposed to work, it doesn't explain what will happen when the thing your phone can locate is found, or anything beyond just opening up the camera. However, this almost becomes a moot point, at least for that day, because the puzzle is solved just by looking at the map, another drawing, and referencing some info from the prologue. The new trick the game puts into your phone doesn't come into play at all on the day, and at the time of me working on the puzzle, the clues were incredibly vague, and referenced that you should still be using the phone to locate the thing it should be able to locate in conjunction with the map. On a more recent examination of the clue page, it has been adjusted to clarify things much better, so they are making improvements as the days go on, but this is the sort of thing that needed to be sorted out during playtesting.I also decided to try to use the online chatbot helper Eli, but it was very unable to do much more than quote the written clues to me, tell me to think harder, and tell me I needed to be more precise with my questions, such as 'How does the <name of item> work together with the map?" or "what does the <name of item> do?", as those questions did not apparently contain the right keywords to get a decent hint. One particular facepalm happened when I could prompt it to say "The <item locator> will be useful when there is <item>", asked "Is there <item> here?" and got "You need to be more precise.." as a response.Fortunately, outside of a sense of honor, you don't actually get stuck, as you can just skip a puzzle that stumps you to continue on. But, just don't count on the online help to actually give you the actual way to solve the puzzle if you get stuck, as there are not even clues available for seven of the 24 days on the help page.

Great for something different
I bought this for my son as he is 14 and I still wanted to get him an advent calendar. He loves to read and I thought this book would be different. He really did like it and said he enjoyed the puzzles.

Don't Waste your Time or Money
I love puzzles, games, escape-rooms. I've traveled around the world and have done escape games the places I travel. So suffice to say I am experienced and rather good at these. This however would make anyone decide that they hate games. The book is made so that you can't read what is needed on the page. Sometimes the QR code is also on the seam making it hard to read. The puzzles don't always work, the answers to riddles don't allow for capitalization, punctuation, often need the word "A" in front but will not accept "The," Sometimes the riddle has multiple correct answers and they're not recognized. There is a puzzle you're supposed to speak the answer into your device and it doesn't recognize my voice, another you're supposed to put your device up to light, it also didn't recognize the light. The last puzzle is a pretty well known puzzle but they did it wrong, it is the incorrect answers. 3+3 will never equal 4!DO NOT BUY this.

Lackluster gameplay, easy and relatively boring. Also, one "new" one arrived used
Great idea, but consider it for kids, not adults.I ordered two copies of this book, and to my dismay, one arrived clearly used. It had noticeable folds, and creased pages, and was not in the new condition as described. While I kept that copy for myself, I gifted the other one before realizing its shortcomings.Gameplay ExperienceAs an avid escape room enthusiast, I found the gameplay to be underwhelming. The puzzles were overly simplistic and lacked the depth and challenge I was expecting. Many of the clues required only basic general knowledge to solve, rather than engaging riddle or puzzle-solving skills. This made the entire experience feel easy and boring, which is disappointing for anyone looking for a true escape room challenge.Interactive ElementsWhile the concept of combining a physical book with QR codes for interactive puzzles sounded intriguing, the execution fell flat. The interactive elements did not enhance the experience as much as I had anticipated. Instead of feeling like an immersive adventure, it felt more like a series of straightforward tasks that lacked excitement.Overall ImpressionIn conclusion, the Escape Game Advent Calendar Book did not live up to its promises of an innovative and captivating escape game experience. The used condition of one copy and the lackluster gameplay made it a disappointing purchase. If you’re seeking a challenging and engaging escape room experience for the holidays, I would recommend looking elsewhere. This product simply does not deliver on its ambitious claims.
