Underwhelmed
In fairness, I am not the target audience for this book. I'm a hotel GM in my 4th decade in the field. But my degree is in Business Admn, not Hotel Management. I rented this e-book in order to explore current academic research and thinking. Most non academic management and leadership books are general in scope, and while plenty can be extrapolated from them and applied to operating a hotel, there is little in them that addresses the specific challenges of hotel management. This book offers less than I'd hoped for. It is a good overview of what a hotel does. Anyone who opens it knowing little or nothing about hotel operations will close it knowing quite a bit. That having been said, I don't know that they'd gain much that they wouldn't learn in a year of working a front desk position. There is, in my opinion, little in the way of actual managerial skills and problem solving insight offered here. In short, it provides more information about the tasks and duties of non-managerial positions than it does about managing the performance of those tasks in a turbulent environment. The 'this is what hotels do' stuff may be wasted on students who're already working in the field. Aspiring managers would benefit far more from 'here are things that will get you through when the excrement hits the rotary cooling device' and you've got to take the hotel off auto-pilot and navigate choppy air . . .say you're short staffed due to an economy driven drought of entry level applicants, your computers are down for 72 hours, a crippling blizzard is forecast to hit, Housekeeping just discovered a guest suicide in your best suite, and a sheriff's deputy is at the front desk waiting to hand you a subpoena to testify in court at the trial of a guest you'd had arrested for dealing narcotics from one of your rooms. Welcome to the hotel management world It's been my experience that when days/nights and normal and smooth you don't even need a manager, good staff can run the place on their own for 6 months and not even notice you're gone. It's when things get rough that you have to manage, as in manage your way through. This textbook presumes smoothness. How to be a manager when your hotel doesn't need one.If you're a student and you need this book for a course, well it is what it is. If you're an experienced manager in some other field and considering making a move into hospitality, this book can be useful in learning some basics. But if you're an experienced hotel manager wanting to improve your knowledge and skills, or if you're a front desk employee wanting to move into management but lacking a degree, there are far better resources. Ray Dalio's 'Principles' is an incredible book. Has nothing to do with hotels as such, but you'll learn tons from it. Marcus Buckingham's books are great. I've been nerding out this summer and devouring Douglas McGregor's writings from back in the day. If you want to manage a hotel you need to reconcile yourself to the hyper turnover and try to mitigate it as best you can. McGregor's writings will help. Dig beyond the brief mention of his stuff that you'll likely get in a human resources or organizational psych course. In summary, this book didn't live up to my hopes of cutting edge ideas I could apply, but it did reassure me that I'm not poorly allocating my time by focusing my professional reading and continuing education on general management books
