Great price for the kit, great knives, would buy more Global
First good knives I've ever had. I had a set of Henkels that I thought was good until I Used one at a friend's house and you might think "eh, a knife is a knife" but 30 seconds of using her Global and I was educated. Great edge and holds it well, light (heavy does NOT equal better), cuts great, handle size is good for me (XL hands) and for my wife (medium female hands) and our friend with small female hands. I'm sure there are better knives if you pay enough and if you are a pro chef you probably have them already but with this starter kit you can probably do 90% of your knife work at a fantastic price.

Can't go wrong
I'm happy to use other knives when I'm at someone's house and that's all they have. For myself, all I buy is Global. This is an excellent little intro set. It seems they aren't as sharp as they used to be when they're delivered, but that's not a big deal. Global knives are durable and fit perfectly in the hand. As with any knife, though, it's important that you feel them out before you commit. Some German knives are excellent as well, but I prefer Japanese. The edge angle on Japanese knives is different from European knives. Be careful when sharpening. But as long as you care for these things, they will literally last a lifetime. The grip is comfortable and the handles are hollow, filled with sand, for outstanding balance. I have this set and an 11" chef knife so far. Looking to add a cleaver and a santoku and I'll have literally all of the bases covered. Anything else I buy after that will just be a luxury. (I also have the diamond honing rod, which I have mixed feelings about. The normal, cheap honing steel may actually be better.)

Great knives. Global had everything I wanted in a knife.
I wanted my knives to have the following characteristics: 1. sharp 2. Lightweight 3. Thin blade. 4. The feel it will last forever. They are most definately sharp. Very light weight. Thinner blade compared to some German knives. I also got the feeling they would last forever due to the handle being metal too. Other knives you may have to worry about the rivets or deteriorating wood handles. Handles: I bought these online based on reviews and the pictures here on Amazon. In the pictures I thought the black dots may have been some kind of rubber for grip. I wasn't too keen of the thought of potentially having little pieces of rubber glued to the knife. I ordered this set anyway and was pleasantly surprised that the dots are just colored dimples like a golf ball. Utility knife grip: Looking at the picture of the utility knife I was worried about the grip because the handle looks a little different. I immediately washed this knife upon receiving it and used it to chop up some veggies. I found it very comfortable to use. No concerns with the grip at all. My set was out of the box sharp and I was chopping things up effortlessly. There really is a "wow" factor if you've only experienced cheap knives from your local *mart stores.

Excellent Global Essentials Set
These knives are excellent! I own a few other global knives and decided to expand to make all of my "daily driver" knives Globals. They are very sharp out of the box. The handles are very comfortable, and they are a good value in this three pack. The main advantage of a global knife to me versus a lot of the other german knives is the fact that they don't require daily maintenance. Global sells some steels but even openly acknowledges that this really isn't required maintenance. And they do go a LONG time between sharpenings. The monolith nature of the knife also reduces the amount of sharp crevices where debris can build; they are easy to wash and stay clean. Possible downsides depending on your use include the fact that the chefs knife is not particularly heavy; if you need a lot of weight with a knife then you might want to consider either a forged global or another heavier knife. Also, while the handles are comfortable for me, I'm not 100% that they would be comfortable for hours on end cutting, particularly if you have large hands. YMMV

i love these knives!
they're great! i love them, i actually like cooking that much more because my knives are so cool and easy to use! i read the reviews of people who didn't know how to sharpen knives and how they're are expensive for them to maintain. however, my father was in special forces and taught me at a young age how to put an edge on a piece of steel, also i youtube'd the Japanese blade sharpening techniques and it's really not that difficult, so i have no problem with maintaining a razor sharp edge on them. the cooks knife i use exclusively and have only had to put it to the whetstone once in 4 months, and i probably didn't even have to but thought it couldn't hurt so did anyways. the utility and pairing knives i let the whole family use and they do not care for them as they should, they let them bounce around in the sink and or put them in the dishwasher. they get used on the granite counter tops etc. so i find myself working on them almost every 2 weeks, the steel is very hard so it does take some work sometimes to get them back where they were. especially when the 13 year old decides to use them to cut wire ties and other things that do not consist of fiber or protein, which is why they don't touch my chefs knife! but all in all i love them! great knives! nobody does steel like the Japanese!

If I Could Hug These Knives, I Would...But They're too Sharp
After taking a knife skills class at a local restaurant, I realized just how much in the dark ages of knives I was living. My Buy-One-Get-One free set of knives I purchased in college just wasn't cutting it anymore (pun intended). The professional chef had a Global knife for us to use and it was like cutting through melted butter. The knives simply fell through all types of vegetables, meats, fish, and everything else we had to cut up. They are extremely light weight, which some may not like at first as they don't have the feel of a heavy-duty knife. But just a few cuts with these knives and you'll see just how strong and easy-to-use they are. I purchased this knife set about four months ago and haven't looked back. I use them for everything and they are exactly what I needed. I cook about two or three times a week so I don't use them every day, and I take good care of them, washing them immediately and drying them, so they have remained very sharp and still look just like they did the day I got them. You can't sharpen them like typical knives as they have a different shaped blade, so don't ruin them. I can't say enough positive things about these knives, I am definitely a Global Fan for Life!

Awesome!
I bought it for my husband for his birthday and he loves it! He cooks everyday so it was perfect present for him. The knifes are very light, well balanced and SHARP! I also loved them and now it's hard to use regular knife even right after sharpening. I used to struggle with cutting off some fat from meat, now it's piece of cake. If someone thinks about buying I recommend to purchase also Global Ceramic Whetstone for sharpening to keep knifes in perfect condition. Sharpening steel should be avoided (to abrasive for such fine knifes (note from booklet that came with the set). Also it is better to keep such knifes in a knife block. I used my old one, but actually think about magnetic knife rack you can place on the wall, pretty cool idea (more knifes and accessories in the booklet). Global knifes are hygienic thanks to smooth contours and seamless construction (no dirts traps). To keep it sharp the best is to wash by hand and immediately dry with the towel. Great, great purchase!

Great Knives but a big investment.
I bought this set a while back and was amazed at how sharp they were when I got them. The chef's knife is great and as useful as you'd expect. I don't find that I have much use personally for the pairing knife, but when I do use it, it's great. The utility knife it turns out is really a nice size for those jobs where a full chef's knife is a little too big. I find myself using that knife much more often than I thought I would because of it's convenient size. While I really like the knives, I'm finding that maintaining them is going to be more expensive that I anticipated. After a few months of use and carving a few turkeys, I'm finding that the chef's knife doesn't seem to cut the way it once did. It's reasonable that this should happen after some use. Usually when this happens, I run the knife over a steel to condition the edge. I find that after some minor sharpening and honing, even a relatively cheap knife can be made very sharp again with minimal effort. Because of the edge and the steel used in the Globals though, they only recommend using a Global diamond steel. This steel costs more than the knives do. I've tried a normal steel which works fine on my other knives (though Global doesn't recommend it) and didn't get very good results. No damage to the knife, but no improvement in the edge either. So, I'm going to end up spending a significant amount of money to keep these knives in best form. Much more than I would have with more conventional knives. I don't consider it a huge drawback since the knives are very good, but it's something to consider when making your purchase. It changes my opinion of the knives a bit though. While they are very very sharp and nice to use, they are expensive to maintain. The German knives are nearly as nice to use, less expensive to buy and less expensive to maintain. To my mind, that puts these knives into the category of useful show items. They're a little bit better than the Germans, but the large cost difference isn't really justified by the performance difference. Buy them if you want really good knives and want to show off a bit. If you want something that works really well but isn't as flashy, go with the Germans or even Victorinix which I also have and work nearly as well.

Great first "proper" chefs knives
Love or hate global, these are quality knives and a decent price. I bought them for working in a high-volume kitchen (1500 kids and staff to feed) and they stood up to abuse day in, day out. Easy to sharpen (USE STONES NOT A STEEL, AND SHARPEN AT 10 Degrees not 15). Easy to clean, easy to use, not amazing for larger-hands' use all-day, but if you have medium to small hands or don't need to chop 3,000 carrots, you should be all set with this set. Grab a G-9 to match for bread stuff

Ottimi
