Lonely Planet The World: a traveller's guide to the planet (Travel Guide)

Bought as a Christmas gift, requested by recipient-to-be. Appears to be a good book.

I bought this book as a source of inspiration for my mum, who is not online, for her next holidays. It's great for the places that it covers, and useful to get ideas of where you might want to go. It doesn't cover every location, which for a book this size you'd think it would. Our family like to travel to weird and off the beaten path locations and there are a few countries or territories in that category not included. But for the vast majority of people this book is great. Just take care of it because, being a big book, the spine could get damaged easily if you don't take care with it. The writing may also be small for some people but it's more than big enough for me.

I love this book. I had a first edition and received this updated third edition as a Christmas present (I'd hinted about). I'm pretty well travelled (over 90 countries visited so far) and this book has been a source of inspiration to me, with this edition updating this information and probably improving even further on the content of the first edition. To set expectations; it isn't give you a really in-depth breakdown of each country, that you may see in country or regional lonely planets - it is a high level overview. I'd consider it to be a 'spring-board' book that prompts the inspired reader to then look into more detail about a potential destination on the internet (or perhaps a lonely planet for a dedicated country/region). As an example the USA section is 8 pages long with 12 places/sights recommended to visit, whilst at the other end of the scale Vanuatu has 2 pages and 3 recommended sights to see. But what it gives you is a very good surface level understanding; comprising of a recommendation of the main places to consider(useful in less obvious countries) which are also plotted on a map and accompanied by photos, a view on the best time to go and variances in different parts of the country, some highlights of food, drink and culture, some basic population/demographic stats and some smallish extra insights/sections where relevant. So, if you are a traveller in search of inspiration with a summarised view and insight into places to go to, I would recommend this book.

Beautiful book

This is a special publication that does not exist with any other publisher. Congrats I have been a guide book fan for more than forty years. The new style of Lonely Planet is the best I have ever read.
