Annihilation, Incoming
Annihilation revitalized the Cosmic side of the Marvel Universe when it was released in 2006. This volume is the second of two meant to compile the entire event, and includes the main Annihilation series, as well as Annihilation: Ronan, Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus, and Annihilation: The Nova Corps Files. The rating this title gets will be a combined average of the three separate scores.Annihilation: RonanSet before the main event, Simon Furman's story follows former Kree Accuser, Ronan, as he searches for a way to redeem himself and end his exile. I'm not actually sure when his exile occurred, likely in the previous volume, but the miniseries does fill in just enough information to be useful. The story is suitably epic, and sets up some of the main players of the event. The art for the book by Jorge Lucas is decent as well, creating a solid, alien look.4/5AnnihilationThis is it, the main draw of the book as written by Keith Giffen. Annihilus, Lord of the Negative Zone has unleashed the Annihilation Wave to wipe out all life in our universe. The story is told mostly from the perspective of Richard Ryder, last of the Nova Corps. Though the event does have some problems delivering on the scope of it's concept, it's still a memorable event. The art for the book is amazing as well, with Andrea Di Vito creating a look as epic as her work on Thor: Disassembled.4/5Annihilation: Heralds of GalactusThe only one of these series set after the main event, the miniseries is comprised of a total of four short stories over two issues each centering on a surviving Herald of Galactus, very important players in the event. Those being Stardust, Flamelord, Terrax, and the Silver Surfer. Each story has a different writer and artist, which helps each part feel unique. It's a great addition to this collection.4/5Annihilation: The Nova Corps FilesLike with Secret War, this volume contains in-universe information pages. They are very helpful, but are more bonus material than actually part of the book, so they won't be scored.Overall, I really liked this collection. Each story explored a unique aspect of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. These stories would lead to a renewed interest in this overlooked side of Marvel. Eventually it would in fact spawn Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's revolutionary revamp of the Guardians of the Galaxy line. Well worth the purchase.4/5
