Concise survey of Greek mythology
First published in 1955 and reissued in both single and two volume editions over the succeeding years, Graves' reader friendly take on the origins of the Greek myths is an entertaining trip back through the mists of time. Along the way Graves paints a compelling picture of the ancient world and skillfully introduces the reader to the differences in culture and social influence which bore heavily on the creation and maintenance of these protagonists of antiquity. Graves' work reads like an operatic libretto rather than an academic tome and imparts a significant amount of knowledge without the reader being aware of it (always a good sign). As usual the Folio Society has presented a beautiful edition of gilt embossed spine and cloth boards along with striking woodblock prints encased in a plain but sturdy slip case. The "Editor's Introduction" by Kenneth McLeish is worth the price just for the information on middle age religious meddling that, for a time, sullied the traditional purity of the mythology before being rescued during the Enlightenment. Academics may dismiss it, but for those interested in the ancient world but lacking a classical education this is a must read.

The Greek Myths 1 and 2
For anyone interested in Greek Mythology, this is a very good 2 book vlume to check out. It tells us how the Greek Gods came into power and gives us detailed stories about them. It also has many of the popular stories like Heracles, Pandora, The Trojan, Ulysses and many many others. Although many of the names are very difficult to pronounce, it is still a very enjoyable read if you are interested in Greek Mythology. For those interested in the subject, I recommend this volume. If you are moderately curious, I'd recommend this volume. If you don't know much, or really anything about the Greek Myths, I think this is still a good place to start to learn about many of the Gods and Goddesses and heroic stories.

Art is great in the illustrations
Art is great in the illustrations. Disappointed all of Graves's commentaries are not included. They are the reason for buying the book. Need to have read the synopsis better before I buy.

Condition exactly as described by the seller. Graves is as much a novelist as a Classics scholar. Interlinks the manifold accounts of the pantheon of Greek gods.
