What a DSLR instruction manual should be.
As anyone who has read a Nikon DSLR owner’s manual will tell you, they make about as enthralling a read as the Patient Information Leaflet in a box of paracetamol. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not expecting a sex scene in the middle chapter, but sentences like ‘JPEG photographs taken in the Adobe RGB color space are EXIF 2.3 and DCF 2.0 compliant’ don’t really mean a lot to me.The Magic Lantern guides go way beyond simply telling how to turn functions on and off within your camera, but actually what consequences these functions have on the quality of the photographs you’re taking. Simon Stafford explains in simple to understand terms what each function is, what each function does and (crucially) whether you need to alter it depending on the situation you are in and what sort of photographs you are taking. This is my second Magic Lantern guide (having already bought one for my Nikon D80) and would no doubt purchase another if and when I get a new camera in the future. My only gripe with this one is, as other reviewers have mentioned, that the binding seems to be a little loose and some pages have separated if you put too much pressure on the spine. Probably just the luck of the draw, but definitely worth watching out for.

Written in proper English for those who aren't techno-junkies.
This book goes a very long way to demystifying the jargon that photo magazines expect us wrinklies (47) to know. There's a very handy credit card sized folding quick reference guide to slip into your wallet. Another good section on just what older lenses can be used.. Standard paperback size, with a good sprinkling of illustrations throughout, I would thoroughly recommend this book as a very welcome supplement to the quite comprehensive, but ultimately rather heavy going user manual which comes with the camera.

As good as they get !
I no longer bother reading manufacturer's manuals be they on disc, online or hard copies. I currently have two Nikon cameras a D7000 & a p7000. For both my immediate additional purchases were for Magic Lantern Guides. They are unbeatable for clarity, depth of product knowledge & sheer logic in the presentation & sequence of modules & functions. They are lanterns that indeed shine brightly!

The best series of books for Nikon users by far!
Simomn Stafford is a Nikon expert but also a real photographer. His books tell you how best to yse your camera and what fewatures to look out for and those also to avoid. Whilst that Nikon manual explains all the functions, it does not tell you what best to do with them. These bookd do! I have had them for all my Nikons over the years and are mandatory bedside reading!

Very comprehensive and far easier to understand than the manual, but for me it was written in a very academic style I have since bought another book which explains the "Hows & Why's" in a far easier to read style. having said that the camera is a very complex piece of kit so it's down to personal preference really.

Nikon D7000 Guide
Not the first time I've bought a book by this author to learn about a Nikon camera system, and it won't be the last! The Magic Lantern guides work well for me, putting the facts I need in an easy to research format and also making it easy to read and follow without being too basic.Simon Stafford has a superb knowledge of his subject and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to utilise their D7000 towards its full potential.

Very informative.
The camera has an incredible range of features and this book is comprehensive. Nice size to keep to hand in the field, and well illustrated. Lacks a little artistic input, favouring the a clinical appraisal of the technical features, but I suppose thats the purpose of the publication. Pretty good overall.

Excellent Book for your NIkon D7000.
If you are like me, the more information you have about your product, the happier you are. This is one of those hard to get a long without products. Definitely recommend this!!

Great book for D7000 users.
This book has been great. It is well written and organized and has helped me discover many features that I was unaware my camera had. Highly recommended for all D7000 users.

Nikon D 700
Not sure I would recommend this book you might as well read the manual, but it was interesting to see what this author had to say.

Very good guide, similar info in manual
I found both this and the Nikon manual to be well-organized, concise, and easy to read with good graphics. While it covers most of the same information as the manual, it provides additional helpful explanations and recommendations, so I thought it was worth it.One missing thing that would be useful is a checklist for recording my choices for the extensive menus of custom settings - I ended up making my own spreadsheets based on lists in this book, the camera menus and manual, and internet lists.I haven't had any problems with the binding that others have mentioned, but I treat books well.

If you can only buy one - this is the one!
I've bought the D80, D90, and now D700 Magic Lantern Guides;Very detailed, excellent tips, clear explanation, and significant effort to add value beyond the information readily availalbe in the Manual; although not as important as the content, I always felt the presentation a bit trite/lack-luster - because all illustrations/pictures were in black and white - but not anymore! Wow, with nice relevant color picture, and great accompaning text this is a fantastic guide! I usually buy 2 to 3 books for every camera I buy; but I only could keep one, this would be it!

These are THE BEST
I've purchased one of the Magic Lantern guides for every Nikon I've owned. They're invaluable for both reference and for learning ever more complicated cameras. These books are rich with pictures and photos, they're well written, they are great for stepping through new (to me) features and the books themselves are constructed well enough to be thrown into a camera bag and paged through over and over again. I wouldn't own a complex digital camera and not purchase one of these, they're that useful.

Excellent information and presented in an easy to understand way
Available for peanuts, it is a must for D7000 owners. Excellent information and presented in an easy to understand way. Provides more than just an iteration of features. I was thoroughly confused with using the many focus modes of the D7000 and this work made the modes understandable. As previously noted by many reviewers, the binding is fragile. So far mine hasn't fallen apart but I was forewarned and have treated it with kid gloves.

Stafford is both insightful and a good communicator.
This was one of the more helpful camera books I have read and I have read a couple thousand pages. I was wishing that Simon Stafford would write one for the new Nikon D500 even though I have already read over 2,000 pages. Stafford is both insightful and a good communicator.

Magic Lantern Guide: Nikon D7000
Magic Lantern Guide: Nikon D7000 Is easy to read and easy to find the subjects you are interested in. I could not figure out how to erase my misspelled name in the copyright section until I read this book (could not figure it out using the Nikon guide) it is a good size book about 5” X 7” so you will bring it with you (in your bag or in the car). It is very readable.

Good Book
This book is a good supplement to the owners manual that came with the Nikon D 7000. It is easier to read and things that seemed murky in the owners manual became clear in the book. The only downside is that I read reviews where owners of the manual had trouble keeping the book from falling apart. After looking at the books physical make-up I believe them. I have exercised extreme caution when reading or handling the book and so far so good.

Just what a D7000 photographer needed.
I bought the basic Magic Lantern Guide a number of years ago but as I became more interested in making good photographs with the Nikon 7000 I realized I needed more help with the menus, bracket shooting, etc. This guide was just what I needed and I use it quite regularly. It gives all the details with clear explanations

And in typical fashion the manual which comes with the camera is rudimentary at best. The Magic Lantern Guide gave me everything
Even though I've been a Nikon shooter for some years now I found the D7000 to be a bit complex. And in typical fashion the manual which comes with the camera is rudimentary at best. The Magic Lantern Guide gave me everything I needed to help understand the functions of the D7000.

Good book with terrible binding
This is without doubt a very serious and well written book (apart from a few simple spelling errors). It is full of useful information but the binding is simply awful. Within days of starting to read it several pages had already fallen out and I am holding parts of it together with paper clips.Update several months later: this "book" is now a heap of loose pages and unusable. I am going to try to contact the publisher but, if anyone at Amazon actually reads our reviews, they should be doing something themselves about this disgraceful product.

Great Material - Unfortunately Bad Glue
I read my book cover to cover. It was great. Week two I was re-reading when I noticed some of the middle pages just came loose. I read other reviews and other purchasers observed the same problem. I would rate the material five stars, but the quality of the book only 1 star. Overall 2 stars.

Magic Lantern Guide for Nikon D7000
The manual enclosed with the Nikon D7000 is not very useful for instruction. It only helped identify certain features so that I was aware of their existance and capabilities. But trying to change settings to get the results I know the camera is capable of proved a daunting task. I am grateful to another seasoned photographer who recommended I purchase the Magic Lantern Guide for Nikon D7000. It is user friendly, colorful, and extremely valuable to me as I get to know my camera. I highly recommend the Magic Lantern Guide for Nikon D7000!
