Could be better, could be a lot worse.
This unit does what it says. It just doesn't do it as accurately as I would have thought it could: Photographs taken in sequence in the same place show as being up to 100 metres apart on the ground and 40 metres apart in altitude. If you want your photographs tagged to "pretty darned close" to where you were then this is just what you want. If you want exact positioning then it is less than totally perfect. Maybe this is as accurate as it is possible to get? I must add that the positions offered by the GPS in my iPhone seemed closer to where I actually was. That said I am still old enough to be amazed that something this small can tell me where I am to any degree of accuracy at all. The speed of GPS signal lock on is quite good (about thirty seconds)and this is increased and maintained by downloading some files over the internet to the unit, via a Canon utility. I have never used any other stand-alone GPS tagger so I can only compare it to the iPhone and against that this unit came second, but at least having this on the camera (WHICH DOES MEAN YOU CAN'T USE THE FLASH) gets all the GPS information tagged onto each picture as it is taken. Over all it is a nice piece of kit, but does seem quite expensive, and as I said can't be used at the same time as the flash, at least on the V1 - don't know about on the V2.

Useful piece of kit
Useful piece of kit, OK it may be a little expensive compared to other GPS units, but then its all down to volume, this only works with Nikon 1 so market is limited. A little slow getting signal in cities with high-rise buildings or in deep canyons, not as accurate as the GPS on my iPhone . Used it extensively on a recent trip to USA, handy as it tags your photos and reminds you of the location, not always easy to remember when you have take 1,000 pics.

Not essential but.
Went to Venice last year and had GPS on camera,it was only when I got home that I saw it's worth. Place names and locations that you missed whilst enjoying the place are recorded so when enjoying the pictures if viewed with the right program's you can see exactly were you took it.

Does what it says on the tin
I bought this as I was travelling to a remote part of the world and I wanted to know where it was that I had taken the photo's. A couple of things to note It takes a few seconds for the GPS to activate - fine if you have your camera on most of the time anyway but of course this drains batteries. You have to be able to see a fair amount of sky for it to work - so forget using it in built up areas, I struggled to get a fix in the jungle (because of the canopy) but in open spaces it works great. I'd echo the other reviewers comment that it seems weird that you have to buy this at all - all comes as standard on a smartphone, that said this is a light neat solution if you want to geotag your pics.

I just received my GP-N100 yesterday and started comparing it to a GeoPIc GPS I bought for my D3 a couple years ago and am impressed already. First, you should know there is a Nikon GP-N100 Utility available that will download assisted GPS files they say decreases the time to determine location. I did that prior to Test 2 as well as updated the firmware. Test 1: Inside my house, a two story, I was on the first floor and not near a window. I did not time it but both GPS's took a minute or two to determine location on first use. (I have not used the GeoPic in over a year.) After uploading to my computer I used PhotoMechanic to do the map location. The GP-N100 was spot on, the GeoPIc was off by about 12 feet. Test 2: Outside on a golf course tee box near my home, open to sky. The GP-N100 acquired within 2-3 seconds, the GeoPIc 5-6 seconds. Using PhotoMechanic again for the maps, both GPS's were dead on for the location in one corner of the tee box. I am taking a trip soon going down the coast of South Carolina, and am looking forward to using both of these GPS's so I can easily identify photo locations in the future. Something else I like about the GP-N100 is it is very compact and light. With that special connector on the Nikon V1 it also does not require a cable connection as is required on the GeoPIc/D3. I highly recommend this GPS, especially at the great price I got from Amazon of $105.
