Q: Would it work with panasonic?

Sadly, I have a Lumix G9 and after destroying a perfectly returnable LF-LM3, It still didn't work. It might work on the GX8 but it doesn't work on the G9. Very disappointed, at Olumpus, at Lumix. They are supposed to be compatible flash systems. Consumer loses. I lose twice!

Q: Does this work with the EM-5 mark 1

No it will not work with the e-m5 mark I. This flash uses the newer 5 pin hot shoe that currently only the e-m5 and e-m10 mark II's have. This 5th pin is what powers this flash as there are no batteries in the flash.

Q: Has anyone used this flash off camera with the omd em5 ii? do you need a trigger unit or can the camera communicate with it on its own? thanks!

This flash is powered off the hot shoe, so it wouldn't work in that scenario. It CAN be used to trigger other battery-powered off-camera flashes.
