It's great
Can't fault it at this cost. Brilliant picture, bright enough even in daylight for most things. Colours are gr at. The auto keystone/focus feature works so so well. I've upgraded from a 1080p and although I have never used an alternative 4K projector I really can't fault this.

Smart Features, Dull Picture
I bought the BenQ GP520 4K HDR projector to replace my ViewSonic LX700 4K, expecting a true upgrade. On paper it looked ideal: 4K resolution, built in Google TV, auto focus and keystone correction, dual speakers, and modern connectivity like HDMI 2.1, USB-C, Bluetooth, and WiFi 6. It promised the convenience of a smart all in one projector that could do everything. Unfortunately, while it ticks a lot of boxes, the overall experience left me disappointed. Let’s start with the positives. The Google TV interface is excellent, fast and responsive. The remote is nicely designed and the integration between Android TV and the projector’s settings is smooth. Switching between inputs or adjusting picture modes is straightforward. The projector itself is fairly compact and looks stylish. It runs quietly, which is something many LED projectors struggle with. Setup is also quick thanks to automatic focus and keystone, both of which work reliably most of the time. Now for the problems, and there are quite a few. The most glaring issue is the picture quality. Despite being a “4K HDR” projector, the image lacks depth and richness. The brightness is underwhelming, making darker scenes look flat and washed out even in a dim room. Blacks are more like dark grey, and the overall contrast feels weak. My older ViewSonic LX700 easily outperforms it in this regard, producing a far more vibrant and punchy image. The BenQ just does not deliver the kind of cinematic quality you expect for its price. Then there are the speakers. They are serviceable for casual use, but even a cheap pair of desktop speakers will sound fuller and more dynamic. The sound is thin, with very little bass, and dialogue often feels distant. Given how much emphasis BenQ puts on its “entertainment experience”, the audio performance is a let down. One design flaw that really surprised me is the lack of physical adjustment. There are no adjustable feet at all. If the image sits too high or low for your screen, you are forced to rely on digital correction, which degrades image quality further. This feels like a major oversight, especially since almost every other projector in this price range has at least some basic manual control. And then there’s the power brick. It is enormous. It genuinely looks like it belongs to a gaming laptop on steroids. It completely ruins the clean setup aesthetic and makes the projector far less portable than it appears in photos. In short, the GP520 is a classic case of trying to do too much and not excelling at the fundamentals. It is convenient, modern, and feature rich, but the core job of a projector is to deliver a great picture, and this one simply does not. If you care about image quality above all else, go for a dedicated “dumb” projector and pair it with a streaming stick and decent speakers. You will get a far better viewing experience for the same price. The GP520 is fine if you want a plug and play all in one solution, but if you are serious about home cinema, you will outgrow it very quickly.
