A story of the early years of the Mormon Chuurch; faith that took the Mormon's to Utah
Between 1856 and 1860 there were 10 hand cart companies with a total of 3,000. They used hand carts because they could not afford wagons and oxen. The majority of these travelers were from England, Wales, Scotland and Scandinavia. This story is about the Martin Company who left too late in the year and encountered snow in Wyoming. The companies traveled from Nebraska (Winter Quarters) and Iowa to the Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory. It was the persecution of the Mormons that made them risk this trip. In Missouri, Governor Boggs ordered theExtermination Order in 1836 of the Mormons. You could legally shoot Mormons. That is when the founder of the church was killed; Joseph Smith and his Brother Hyrum The church still recognizes and gives tribute to the hand cartpioneers with a celebration every year; Pioneer Day. 210 of the 980 people in these two hand cart companies died along the way. The LDS Church began in up state New York with 6 members in 1830. There are now over 17 million members in over 180 countries. They have translated the Bible and The Book of Mormon in all of these countries. There are approx. 90,000 missionaries in service around the world. It is a true World Church. There are more non English speaking Mormons than English speaking Mormons. There are over 400 new churches (Wards) built every year.More than one a day. The church remains financial strong thru tithing (10%) and the fact that all Mormon leaders do not receive paychecks. The church owns hundreds of farms. The products of these farms are given to Mormons and non-Mormons in need, thru the church welfare system. The church owns the largest cattle ranch in the USA.Salt Lake City is still the hub of the church. Temple Square in Salt Lake is a great place to visit. There are guided tours in many different languages. Approx. 63% of the people living in Utah are Mormon. The church also owns three private schools. BYU (Brigham Young University) in Provo, Utah (557 acres); Idaho & Hawaii. They also have a business school in Virginia and a Law School in Utah. A grand total of 52,900 students. 51% Male & 49% Female. The cost of Tuition is very low. Church members: $2,810 per semester and non members $5,620.Graduation rate 79%. Acceptance rate 48%.Anyway....From humble beginnings, great things can happen.

decent movie but
you should know it is a mormon movie. i consider it somewhat propaganda as they dont tell the entire mormon truth: Jesus and lucifer are brothers, the men can become gods of their own planet, etc. also, at the end it indicated he married a woman named thisbe. what isnt mentioned is that she was wife 3 of 4. they could have been truthful, but decided to be slithery to hide their real mormon selves instead. par for the cult course.

Great historical story, slightly propagandist
This is a good movie. It is based on a truly inspirational story. However, at several points the screenwriter could have appealed to a general audience by leaving out propagandist points from the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. For example, about the mid point, when Brother Dobson carries away the dwarf that gave everything he had to help people, rather than say that, they say he gave everything for the gospel. Similarly, when a has died towards the end of the movie, the only thing cited by his wife to say he was a good man is that he was the leader of the London Branch. He can be a good man, without attaining a position of leadership or power within the church. The final straw is the last text line after the movie ends. The inspirational story of the woman having seven daughters who she would some stand together for her to be proud. At the end, the text says they were all either Ward or Stake Relief Society Presidents concurrently - implying that their mother would not be proud of them until they achieved that position, and that the prophecy would not be fulfilled until they held those positions "concurrently." This is terrible, implying that their mother was not proud when they become proud and faithful women. Faithful wives, and loving mothers. This movie is truly inspirational, it is unfortunate that they had to ruin the message with the last line of the movie.

Well-done movie about a true story most have never heard
Details for this story were drawn directly from deeply personal diaries of those who experienced this difficult journey, and from public documents. This makes the story powerful separate from the good acting or even the beautiful scenery. I recommend this movie for those who know little about the pioneers who gave up everything, even their lives for their faith. You don't need to believe as they do to respect the strength of their faith in Jesus Christ and in those who were guided by or who healed in His name. Some of the suffering portrayed is difficult to watch and may not be appropriate for children under the age of 10.

Very inspiring!
I loved this movie! It was very inspirational and moving. The actors were fantastic and they portrayed realistically how it must have been traveling to Utah in those days. I was mesmerized by Brigham Young and his vision, and how Ephraim Hanks was so obedient to him that Brigham realized he would do anything for him. The healing gift that Epharim had was very powerful, and he put it to good use. This movie may have been about the Mormons, but it was greater than one religion. It was about believing in God. Also, the historical context was quite remarkable. To actually experience the hardships they experienced and survive must have been quite traumatic. We take life for granted, and these types of movies are priceless because they show how faith and action work together.

Not Just for Mormons!
This movie is an amazing story and an awesome testimony to a non-religious JESUS! I know some are skeptical about the raising of dead people, but it happens because of Him!The movie demonstrates that the Lord doesn't require perfect people or doctrines. He REALLY is looking deeper to the core of our being (heart). Are we looking to Him? Trusting Him? Do we want Him involved in ALL areas of our lives? The GREAT NEWS about the God-man, JESUS, and what He accomplished for us IS the power of God to save us from everything we need saving from!

Keep the tissues close!
Touching portrayal of real life healer Ephraim Hanks taken from diaries of the actual parties portrayed.Ephraim, who struggles for approval from his parents most of his life eventually becomes a key figure in the rescue of the Willie and Martin handcart companies. Through his faith and good works he evolves into a man of character and integrity who provides healing and relief to many who are suffering.A heartwarming true story.
