Durable and beastly
This head is a beastly batter head. Having multiple snares to compare against, I am going to give a detailed review.Tuning... This Evans Onyx is durable. It's on a 5×14 PDP Concept Maple snare. I have it pretty high pitched, about a half step lower than my 6.5x13" Pork Pie snare with Ambassador heads. It stretched evenly and has a darker sound. It's very controlled. There are few overtones. I do not have a moon gel on it. It's use is great for heavy stuff or if your looking for a dark, focused yet controlled attack. It would not use it for a jazz gig or a concert gig. The The response from the head is not even close to what an Ambassasdor or Evans G1 or G2 head would be. Doubles need to be stroked out more to get a clean, responsive sound.

A good coated head
I play and record rock music in Los Angeles California, I'm using this head on a 18" DW floor tom, it has a nice sustain and a big sound without excessive resonance. I like the Evans Genera Dry heads also but they don't offer that in 18" so a quick visit to the Evans web site got me pointed to this drum head, the web site has a nice slider tool that allows you to quickly evaluate all the Evans models for tonal characteristics. The black color of the head looks good with my ebony stained maple drums.A trick I learned from studying Jon Bonham is using batter heads for resonant on drum bottom, I move the stock DW batter head to the bottom of the drum and put this coated head on top, the drum sounds incredible, like a tympani and there is no long "hair-ong-ga" overtones, just fat meaty floor tom.I'm liking Evans heads and accessories a lot, it's a company that is innovating and improving things for drummers. I'll buy another one of these heads when this one wears out.Good music to all.

Great head if you know what you're looking for.
I disagree with reviews saying the dampening goes too far. That is why you would buy a snare head like this. This is a very specific head-type but if you know what you want this could be just what you are looking for. I use this head for my stays-at-home, never-gets-gigged-with DW kit and I could not be happier with the sound. It's tight and poppy, lots of snap but still enough overtones left to really appreciate things like ghost notes...IN THE RIGHT SETTING. This head is perfect for my small rehearsal space where I dont need lots of volume or natural overtones/reverb. This head would be adequate for live if it is mic'ed, and would kill it in the studio. But that's what this head is all about; dry, flat overtones, but still punchy without killing the natural sound of the snare. I LOVE this head. SO happy I bought it. You will be too if you know what you want.

Great tone for all tunings
Got this head to put on my 14x14 Gretsch floor tom and it’s great! I tune it low for a fatter controlled sound on fusion dates, but you can really crank it for bop tuning without sounding like you’re choking the drum. It’s durable and has enough coating to play brushes on as well.

Superb!
I bought the 12” and 13” heads for my rack toms, and my drums have never sounded better. That matte black finish is badass, the tone is incredible, the ease of tuning is brillliant, and the make of the Head is perfect. 5/5. No complaints whatsoever.(Side note: I bought a black hydraulic 16” for my floor tom so I wouldn’t need any additional dampening; floor tom has the best body and tone it’s ever had since I bought my kit 12 years ago. Evans for life.)
