Maki-e, when translated from Japanese literally means ‘sprinkled picture’. The Japanese Maki-e technique was first devised in the Tempyo Era (710-794), and was further refined in the Heian Era (794-1194), when the method was perfected and several distinct styles emerged. The beautiful traditional patterns, featuring rich lustrous surfaces enhanced by elegant touches of gold and silver, are highly appreciated by art enthusiasts throughout the world. Modern Maki-e is the technique which is achieved by silk screen printing under the layer and finished by Maki-e craftsmens’ hands one by one. This particular pen has a stunning silk screen printing of two cranes adorning the barrel, which is then hand finished with blue strokes representing their natural wetland habitat. This rollerball pen has distinctive writing qualities, on account of the gel or water-based ink it uses, as opposed to the viscous ink used in a ballpoint pen. This particular pen uses OHTO’s ceramic rollerball refills, should you need to replenish the ink (the pen is fitted with one black ink refill). Quite small and slim in the hand, but comfortable in use and writes very well with the supplied black refill. Nice positive fitting of the cap too.
