Not as good as I thought it would be....
I purchased this book after reading all the rave reviews. Regrettably I was utterly underwhelmed by the whole thing. There were some lovely photographs in this book, but the title leads you to think you are going to see the second world war in vivid colour (a wide reaching claim). I expected to see more dramatic military photographs especially as it carries the Imperial War Museum logo and Ian Carter is one of their curators. I just expected to see more. Instead I got a lot of subdued almost tame photo’s, many aircraft, ships and posed for pictures (some action, not much). 79 photos in 120 pages isn’t too bad a ratio and the captions were well written but I was still disenchanted by the whole thing.Considering the price of this book I would have expected it to have been a glossy finish instead what you actually get is a dull matt finish leaving the whole thing feeling just a little flat. It almost felt like it had been done on the cheap. It would have been better as a hardback but considering the content I still don’t think it was worth £14.99 even if it were a hardback. Knock a fiver off it and maybe....sorry but there are better books out there.

Informative
I found this book on sale at an old library, loads of books were being sold off to clear space for the new, this one seemed to jump out at me. Possibly because the Second World War, for some reason, fascinates me and being able to see colour pictures made it seem all the more real! The pictures are not the stars of the book though, the diary entries are! So many entries and different points of view from all kinds of people, we are able to read about people's thoughts, fears, feelings and frustrations at different points of the war.As for the pictures, which is why I believe most people would pick up a book like this, they were okay but I wouldn’t say they were fantastic, nor were they rare or unseen - I have seen many of these pictures before in other books, so really there’s not much that sets this book apart from any other book on World War Two.However, it is beautifully put together and packed full of interesting information and history.4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
