You can purchase the "Tone E" which would be the 1st string on a guitar (not the sixth, that would be an octave lower) . Then there is "Tone A" which is just the A at 440 hz **Q: Is this tuning fork really 10 inches long and 3 inches wide as it states in the product dimentions?** A: no, it is not. more like almost 5 1/2 inches by 1/2 inch wide. but who cares what the dimensions are? it tunes to a perfect E. **Q: If you hit it. Will it make a sound?** A: You hit the forked end against a hard surface...THEN you immediately bring the tuning fork UP TO YOUR EAR. You should hear a light, but clear tone from the vibrating metal. This is the specific pitch for whatever version you bought (I got the "E" so I can quickly tune my guitar). If you just hit the thing against something, and DON'T bring it up to your ear, all you hear is maybe a dull ding plus the thud of the instrument as it is struck. Tuning forks are best for people that have good relative pitch (unlike those with "perfect pitch", we might need an actual pitch to start with--we can get the other needed tones from there). **Q: Is it steel or aluminum?
