God has blessed guitar players with this fine study!!!
I do no want to sound expert or arrogant but I'd like very much to talk to those who are not quite up to speed on reading music. It seems that is one of the major comments in most of these comments . I have played piano in dance bands, small jazz groups, WLW TV and radio in Cincinnati for two years and altogether about 25 years. With all that said, I am no better-off than any of you who are just learning to read. Let me put you mind at ease. Basically the music staff has lines and spaces. The four spaces are F-A-C-E and the five lines are E-G-B-D-F. Now I am being kind of rediculous to make my point. With all my experience, I am not much better-off than any of you because I do not know where any of these notes go on the fretboard. Plus, I am a young 83 and do not have the sharp memory that most of you have over me. But I will say this. A beautiful sound of a guitar note or a beautiul altered jazz chord almost gives me a chill. So while some of you will be struggling with F-A-C-E and E-G-B-D-F.think of me with all my experience trying to figure out where in the h--- do all these notes go on the fretboard. So we are all kind of even. So in closing, I do not wish to be a know-it-all but just want to encourage all of you to study this book like your pants where are on fire. Thats what I am going to do because I Luuuuuuuuuve the sound of the guitar and of all the books I have seen, This is simply a "great" one

Second go around.
I finished the book with a teacher 10 years ago. Stopped playing and picked it up again 6 months ago to reengage with my instrument. This time around it's a whole new book, My playing is so much better after time off, i don't understand and im not sure i like it but it's true, but that's the power of this book and further volumes. 1 hour a day, and review, review, review...learn it, practice it, move on...come back and play the previous exercise until you can notice marked improvement, come back to it three or four times, accumulate.. . that's where the goods are. If you can finish this book and "master" it, your on your way to limitless musicality, (i think thats a word). It's one thing to learn this book, but practice it then master it. I got 3/4 of the way throught Vol. 2 and put the guitar down regretfully for a few years. Use a lot of other sources with it, main text, not ur only text. Play the exercises slowly, at 60 bpm, develop the muscle memory and you'll get to musical speed much faster that struggling with a tempo you cannot play. My teacher was extremely helpful the first time through. Take a year to three years of lessons with this book from a teacher who reads, that will set you up to be able to work through further volumes. I notice now that i never mastered any of the exercises, lots of us know how to play a tune, song, exercise, how many of us master the material, not i, that has been a serious flaw in my study and i know im not alone, not this time around. Old Man Rock Band anyone!

Lots of study and practice
After playing for years by ear and learning chords and some theory and some reading notation....I finally decided learn the right way. And yes there are great players who take pride in not knowing how to read music. To each their own. I prefer reading the signposts along the highway to avoid heading down a dead ends instead of having to "figure it out" by ear and then realize I hit a dead end because I couldn't read all the signs. So far a very thorough method. Yes it takes time but why not actually understand why for hundreds of years this notation system has been preserved and why you enjoy music etc? BTW the videos for lesson 1 book from Berklee (more than 150+ videos) are available free on YouTube. Search for "Larry Baione".

Nothing better to learn how to read music (not just tablature) and apply to guitar and other music ventures
I used this when I transitioned from piano to guitar as a teenager under instruction from a Berklee graduate. Now I am using it again to teach my 14 year old son guitar in the same kind of transition. He was able to site read/play the first lessons immediately - first day - having never played guitar before. That is a tribute to how this book is structured - it is designed to teach you to read music and apply that to guitar - it is unmatched in that regard in my opinion. Many other options exist for learning techniques or theory or songs, but this is the best series for learning to read music with a guitar - and the foundations of site reading picked up here could be applied to any other instrument. That is very different than tablature based books and learning. There is a place for tablature of course - it makes life much easier and is more appropriate for stringed instruments in many circumstances - not just for popular music. That said, a foundation of knowing how to read and write music is demonstrated to have beneficial effects on spacial, mathematical, and creative development in multiple disciplines, even beyond music. This book is a great investment on that path - exceedingly easy to pick up from day one and progresses at the right pace from there.

Professor preferred
My young teen is taking guitar from one of the local college professors. After a couple weeks in a moreSimple book he said we needed to get this one instead. My child has done great with it and it’s fantastic that the professor uses his copy from the 80’s and everything is the same page number and all.Truly a classic

Not a Lot of Fun, But Does What It's Supposed To
When my instructor started me on this book a year ago, I hated it! After all, I'd been playing actual songs, and I didn't want to go back to playing boring old exercises. Everything in this method seems very dry and pedantic. But, wow... after working through the pieces and drills in this book with his guidance, I have to say my playing ability has advanced by leaps and bounds. I hate to say it, but sometimes learning a skill is just plain hard work and determination, and this book gives you a good dose of the hard work.

Great method but not for guitarists new to notation (even with practical experience)
I have been playing guitar for a few years and have a good practical base. I now want to get into jazz guitar and of course that means learning to read notation. For me, this method was to fast paced and dry straight off the bat, i nearly lost motivation. I think this book is best completed with a tutor. But don't fear - I can highly recommend the Mel Bay Modern method for students who our self taught. I am on the second volume of the Mel Bay series now and will be moving onto the Leavitt method later on down the road as it is the superior method - just don't rush it like i tried to do, enjoy the process and start with a funner easier method.

Very simple
I never was overly interested in learning to read music for guitar, its not exactly a high demand considering most people either prefer to learn by ear or tab. But i thought id go through this book in my own time anyway just so if i ever needed it.Its easy to understand and very helpful. You can go as far as you want to. If you just want the basics you can just go through the first 3rd and that should set you up as far as reading music and translating it onto a guitar.

Easy to follow and great for guitarists
This was recommended by my guitar tutor. It’s well written and progesses nicely. The author is very good in reminding you to “review all material”. One of the best books I’ve found to teach sight reading for guitarists.

A Great book for teaching guitar sight-reading
The duets are very tuneful but what makes this special is the focus on learning to practise reading notation. So many other books use tab and lots of dot patterns or diagrams so you end up skipping the notation on the stave.
