An alternative to the gym?
Product was received without any fixings to assemble it but replacements were quickly supplied by Handy. Easy to assemble but a nightmare to fill with sand! As I had a pile of soft sand in the garden I thought I would use that. The filler hole in the roller is quite small for sand and getting it through a funnel meant it needed to be dry. I spent several days drying 2 barrow loads of sand! 1 barrow load made the roller heavy but it was a nightmare to push as the sand settled at the bottom of the roller. The second barrow load makes it really heavy but easier to push. After all the rain, the ground is soft enough to flatten - although a large area of grass means I could get quite fit from rolling it! Would highly recommend the product especially if you have access to large quantities of dry sand.

Great value and does a great job
I am doing my house and garden up. Last summer I wanted to start laying lawn where the previous owners had laid flag stones. My son (15) did most of the work, clearing the ground. I found this roller after much searching, as its not something you need every day, so I wanted something affordable but still sturdy enough. Arrived quickly and very easy to put together. We put water in for weight and were very pleased with the ease of use. The grass laid so far looks great. We emptied it out over the winter so it doesn't freeze or rust inside..

Plug doesn't seal
Seemed a great, well made product. Easy to assemble. Takes a short while to fill due to capacity. Then couldn't fit the bung snug because the threaded insert had been welded on the slant so the bung will never fully tighten up to the flat edge. So i was basically running around the garden before it lost half the water and weight. Its a fix i'm going to go myself when i get around to it - but an annoying quality issue that should have been spotted in the factory. Hense 3 stars overall

great buy
I spend some time looking at previous reviews to identify the best value roller that was substancial enough for my needs. This, as previous reviews, is great. It's held up really well and have been used extensively. Filled with water has been heavy enough and sand is the other option - as pointed out before the hole is small so filling it may test my patience. Looking for a good reasonable roller - this definately ticks the box.

Heavy roller when filled with sand
This is a large heavy roller when filled with sand. The aperture through which sand can be poured is narrow, so be prepared to spend an hour or so filling, especially is sand is damp. I deducted one star as the fitment of the blade which scrapes soil is awkward/difficult as it's badly matched to the holes in the handle.

Poor instructions, can’t get the scraper bar on and constantly leaks.
I wanted a roller to get light bumps out of the lawn. I thought I’d go for a slightly larger one than many (having used a small one in the past that achieved little), and being a believer in the adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ I thought I’d go for one that cost a bit more than some. However, although construction on the face of it is simple, I was initially confused when the instructions said it came with 6 sets of nuts and bolts. It doesn’t, it has 4 (which is all that’s required). The final piece I tried to attach was the scraper bar, but I found it impossible. It’s about 10mm too long to line-up with the bolt holes on the handle (no great problem though, I don’t feel I really need it). And finally, as others have said, it constantly leaks from the bung when filled with water. It’s so frustrating that I can’t store it upright. Whoever manufactures this clearly doesn’t do quality control. The only way I’d be happy with this purchase is if the seller either sends me one that is manufactured properly or refunds me. We’ll see...

Flatten established lawn
I decided to fill my roller with sand because I recall my father filling his roller with water and the welded seam bursting when it was left out during a severe frost. Having seen the comments about problems filling with damp sand, I decided to use Kiln Dried Block Paving Sand from Wickes at £4.29 per sack. The sand was very free running and went into the drum quickly and easily through a funnel. I used three 25 kg sacks of sand and these filled the drum almost completely.I have an established lawn that over the years has become a little bumpy with worm casts, ant nests and general use. I assumed that before rolling it would be best to wait until some rain had dampened the ground, but being impatient to try out my new roller, I went ahead and rolled my dry-as-a-bone lawn. Not really knowing the best technique for using the roller, at first I tried rolling up and down the whole length of the lawn. This provided a good physical work out, but not any noticeable results. So I tried working on a high spot, just rolling back and forth two or three feet at a time and changing direction slightly each time, to avoid making a channel in the lawn. By rolling over and over the same small patch of lawn it resulted in a circular area of about two or three feet diameter that was nicely flattened. No doubt, when the ground gets softened by rain it will need a lot less work, but with perseverance this technique does produce results on dry ground.
