Star Wars: Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir Paperback – October 14, 2014

Only Clone Wars fans need apply. If you're a hardcore fan who's seen every episode and has followed every story arc and can't get enough Clone Wars, then this is a decent addition to the saga. If you're merely a casual fan who couldn't tell the Black Sun from Death Watch you're probably better off avoiding this one.The story feels like a 3-4 episode story from The Clone Wars itself. It even follows a similar format, and you can tell where each part of the story would've been broken into separate episodes. The downside to the comic format is that it's easy to rush through the entire book in half an hour. A lot of scenes go by quickly, and a bit of subtly is lost. On the plus side, due to the fact that this is a comic, it can go slightly darker than the show could, and a few panels even show a little carnage and blood.If you're looking for closure to Darth Maul's story, you may be disappointed. The ending is open ended, and although it hints at things to come, there is no absolute conclusion for Maul's character. While Maul himself doesn't get closure, one other important character from the show does meet their definite end, so the entire story isn't a complete waste.All in all, the book is basically just a fun little adventure featuring Dooku and Grievous fighting against Maul and his forces. Things end up a little more complicated than that, but not by much. If the idea of Separatists vs Terrorists and dueling Dark Lords sounds fun, then you could do worse than this book. But if you're looking for a deeper, more meaningful experience, look elsewhere.

Story is amazing, art is well done, and I'm glad there's a continuation from the Clone Wars series. A few questions I would have for the author is: is this book immediately following Sidious' capture of Maul in the last episode of Maul's Clone Wars arc, or is there a brief time-lapse between the two? Sidious says "I have other uses for you" but was that just to find/capture/kill Mother Talzen, or were there other things that Maul was supposed to help Sidious with?

We read this after watching the Clone Wars series. It helps finish a story arc that was not filmed yet when the series was pulled when Disney bought the franchise.

NO SPOILERS. I had been waiting for this story arc since they released the lost missions back in may. This was a major disappointment. I read it in about 30 minutes, meaning it would've had trouble filling up 2 episodes time wise. The transitions from box to box in the comic were very spaced time wise and kind of sloppily. The artwork wasn't the greatest and even led to continuity errors, like the clones in this are shown in phase 1 armor (clone armor of attack of the clones), which we know was abandoned well before season 5 of the clone wars, also darth sidious is shown in what looks like his post revenge of the sith appearence (pale wrinkled face with yellow eyes) when this clearly took place before episode 3 because...its the freakin clone wars. But not to mention the ending doesn't really tie up anything. But it was only $10. Get this if you want to continue the unfinished stories from the clone wars.

Another great Darth Maul story arc, I just wish it were a bit longer. It ends up being 1 part Darth Maul, 1 part Mother Talzin, and one part triple threat match between the Shadow Collective, Republic, and Confederacy. Great story, great action, I just wish there were a bit more to it in general. The cliffhanger with Maul at the end is brutal, here's hoping we see more of him soon!

I loved Star Wars Clone Wars and I was disappointed that it ended without wrapping up the story of some of the major characters. This book tells a tale that is revealing and interesting. It also provides some closure to the story of Darth Maul. Though it doesn't provide full closure, it's a great story that left me wanting some more. I look forward to additional stories.

The artwork in this TPB is decent and works really well in the kindle zoom format (I viewed it on a PC). It was cool to see one of the lost arcs of The Clone Wars TV series brought to life in a different format. I am giving this three stars primarily for the writing - it was a little lackluster and bland for the first half. The second half picked up and got a lot better. Avoiding any spoilers, I'll just say that while it was entertaining to see a further continuation of the story of a fan-favorite character, very little was resolved by the end of the book.Absolutely necessary for the completionist that wants to have read the entire new cannon before Episode VII premiers. Just a mediocre comic for anyone who isn't that in to Star Wars.

An excellent extension of the story first starting in the Clone Wars cartoon series. If you liked the story line about Maul in the Clone Wars cartoon series then you're gonna love this continuing story. It was very awesome. If only Disney would have let the Clone Wars series go one more season then we could have seen this great story and more on screen.

Being a fan of the clone wars series and a massive fan of the legendary Darth Maul, it was amazing to see him return from the dead to play a further role in the clone war. It was however a disappointment to see his story end abruptly with loose ends unexplained, so I was glad to see his story completed in this graphic novel.For all fans of Darth Maul this is a must read and features amazing artwork that does the character justice.

A promising story for the clone wars but to short considering the price. Took about 15 min to read :/

Maul wurde besiegt doch nicht bezwungen. Nach seiner Niederlage gegen Darth Sidious hat ihn sein einstiger Meister in einen Kerker Count Dookus geworfen und nun droht ihm wohl die unvermeidbare Hinrichtung als Bedrohung für die Regel der Zwei. Doch es wäre nicht das erste Mal, wenn Maul seinem Tod entgehen würde...- Maul lebt! -Hiermit ziehe ich meine vergangene Kritik an The Clone Wars förmlich zurück. Die Serie war doch auf ihre Weise das beste was Star Wars nach Episode III passieren konnte und sie hat etwas erstaunliches vollbracht, sie wurde mit jeder Staffel interessanter. Die guten gehen immer zu früh uns und so waren es auch bei TCW nicht sinkende Zuschauerzahlen oder zu hohe Produktionskosten, sondern der Verkauf des gesamten Franchises an Disney, das zum Ende führte. Die Serie endete mitten in ihrer Blüte.The Clone Wars war jedoch auch über die Grenzen des Fandoms des Expanded Univers hinaus kontrovers und bot Stoff für aufgeregte Diskussionen. Etwas mehr als ein Jahrzehnt nach Episode I brachte man Darth Maul in der vierten Staffel zurück und entfesselte zuerst einmal einen Sturm der Entrüstung. Ohne den zurückgekehrten Maul auch nur einmal in Aktion gesehen zu haben wurde diese von George Lucas höchstselbst mitgetragene Idee heftigst kritisiert. Doch Lucas und Dave Filonis Mut wurde doch belohnt. Der wiederauferstandene Darth Maul erwies sich als einer der faszinierendsten und beliebtesten The Clone Wars-Charaktere, der auch bereits nicht mehr ganz so jungen Fans der Prequels in seinen Bann schlagen konnte. Maul 2.0 war zwar weniger wortkarg und weniger gelenkig, entsprach aber ganz und gar dem, was manchen bisher nur als Fan-Theorie vorgeschwebt war. Maul Reborn demonstrierte Raffinesse, Ambition und alles was man sich von einem Lehrling Darth Sidious erwartet hätte.- Das Serienende und die Folgen für Darth Maul -Nicht nur Darth Sidious hatte in TCW noch Pläne mit Maul, auch die Schöpfer der Serie wollten Mauls Arc noch "abschließen". Disney war jedoch wohl bereits mehr an REBELS als an einer Fortführung von TCW interessiert und so blieben viele Handlungsbögen offen. Diese sollen nun doch größtenteils abgeschlossen werden, denn Drehbücher gab es während der Arbeiten an Staffel 6 bereits für Staffel 8. In Comics oder Romanen plant man in den kommenden Jahren auf The Clone Wars zurück zu kommen und manchen Charakteren vielleicht doch noch eine Art Happy End zu schenken. Am Serienende war Darth Maul jedoch verschollen und keiner wusste wohin, was aus ihm wurde klärt nun SON OF DATHOMIR.- Die Handlung -Im Gegensatz zu den Dreiteilern innerhalb der Serie erscheint mir SON OF DATHOMIR relativ kurz, so als hätte man mehr als notwendig Wert auf eine straffe Erzählung gelegt. Dafür kann sich diese Erzählung jedoch sehen lassen, auch wenn man bereits zu anfangs einige Wendepunkte richtig vermuten könnte. Vorsicht Spoiler: Man sollte die Durchtriebenheit eines Darth Sidious niemals unterschätzen.Die große Frage ist natürlich gleich zu Beginn: Wird Darth Maul sterben? Der weitere Verlauf der galaktischen Geschichte scheint es ja nahe zu legen, denn Maul könnte als ehemaliger Sith-Schüler doch jederzeit selbst einen zweiten Sith-Orden begründen, indem er einen eigenen Schüler annimmt. Zugleich muss auch Mauls Herrschaft über die galaktische Unterwelt enden.SON OF DATHOMIR hat so einige Erklärungen zu bieten und schafft es nebenbei sogar noch die Hintergrundgeschichte Mauls und Mutter Talzins zu vertiefen. Wenn Maul, Dooku, Grievous, Talzin und Sidious ins Spiel kommen sind großartige Duelle natürlich unvermeidlich und der Leser fühlt sich schon darum betrogen, dass es ausgerechnet diese nie in Animationsform bringen dürften. Außer man verfilmt den Comic irgendwann im The Clone Wars-Stil, was ja auch nicht völlig ausgeschlossen werden kann.Am Ende bleiben jedoch viele Fragen offen und es liegt eine melancholische Atmosphäre in der Luft, bei der man sich doch wieder an die Hoffnung klammert, es könnte weiter gehen. Mauls Einfluss auf Death Watch könnte ja auch in REBELS noch eine Rolle spielen und irgendjemand könnte ja auch die Ruinen Dathomirs besuchen.- Der Anti-Held -Was würde ein ehemaliger Sith-Lord tun, wenn er sich von seinem Meister verraten fühlt und seiner Hinrichtung nur knapp entwischt ist? Er plant seine Rache und riskiert dabei auch Verbündete oder zumindest ein Heer an Fußsoldaten zu verlieren.In SON OF DATHOMIR denkt Maul erst einmal nicht daran sein Imperium zu vergrößern oder sich zu verstecken, sondern weiß, dass er handeln und sich seinen Gegnern stellen muss. Einem Gegner wie Maul ist jedoch der erfolgsverwöhnte Count Dooku, denn Maul erweist sich genauso skrupellos wie sein Ersatz an Sidious Seite. Mauls militärische Stärke wirkt im Comic jedoch stellenweise eher bescheiden und man fragt sich wie viele Truppen er auf Mandalore zurücklassen musste, um die dortigen Aufständischen unter Kontrolle zu halten.- Die Sith -Große Charakter-Momente erleben weder Count Dooku noch Darth Sidious oder General Grievous. Sidious in einer Separatisten-Zitadelle herumspazieren und Grievous an Bord von Sidious Shuttle zu sehen wirft jedoch Fragen auf, wie viel Grievous von Sidious wahrer Identität wusste und woher Dooku sein Vertrauen nahm, dass Sidious wirklich hinter der Sache der Separatisten stand.Während Dooku einigermaßen wie der meinungslose Erfüllungsgehilfe des dunklen Lords erscheint zeigt sich Grievous zumindest von einer ungewohnt respektlosen Seite. Der Droiden-General scheint Dooku doch nicht so unreflektiert zu vertrauen, wie es der Count vielleicht glaubt. Nach SON OF DATHOMIR scheint es sogar möglich, dass Grievous eigentlich nur Darth Sidious treu ergeben war und Grievous Kontaktaufnahme mit Sidious in Episode III ergibt deutlich mehr Sinn. Beide kannten sich nicht nur, Grievous war Sidious gegenüber sogar loyal.- Resümee -Insgesamt erscheint mir der Comic zu kurz, auch wenn es ihm gelingt die Geschichte bestens auf den Punkt zu bringen. Diese Kürze und das zurückbleibende Gefühl, dass hier nur das Gerippe einer vielschichtigeren Geschichte vorliegt könnten auch dazu führen, dass SON OF DATHOMIR eben leider nicht jenen Kultstatus entwickeln wird, den der Comic bräuchte um irgendwann vielleicht doch in einen Animationsfilm verarbeitet zu werden.
