Donβt hesitate!
I regret waiting so long to buy this book. Expertly written and beautiful, inspiring artwork. I donβt have a DVD player so I can neither confirm nor deny some of the other reviews regarding issues with the DVD, but I can say that the contents of the book alone is more than enough to inspire, inform, and motivate the reader. Truly outstanding!

Covers everything you need to know to start painting with hot wax
I bought two books on encaustics going by the star rating and this is by far the best of the two. It is very beginner oriented and covers just about everything you can do with hot wax painting. It is very down to earth and the author, Daniella Woolf, is a very good teacher. I have seen some of her videos on YouTube and was really pleased to find that she was the author of this book. It also comes with a DVD that I haven't had time to watch yet but I'm really looking forward to it. My only problem with the book is the size of the font. There was so much white space left on the pages I'm not sure why they chose such a tiny font for the main text and even smaller for the credits under pictures of artists' work. After 121 pages of what you can do with the wax and pictures of beautiful pictures of what other artists have done, there is 32 pages of projects the reader can do in a much smaller beginners studio. They seem a little bit simple after seeing the pictures of professional work, but they are a great starting place for a crafter like me.

Does Amazon Read its Own Reviews?
This is an excellent book, covering in detail many aspects of working with encaustic wax, and I would have given this five stars + if the DVD worked. It is extremely frustrating, because what little bit I was able to see of the DVD was excellent. It seems that some of the reviewers got bad DVDs and some got functional ones, so I took a chance that enough complaints had been made that the problem should have been rectified. Amazon should not be selling this damaged product -- does Amazon read its own reviews?

Excellent book!
I chose this book somewhat randomly, and am SO happy with it! I am just starting to use encaustics, after a long career in the decorative arts. I rarely do things "by the book," and this is a very good fit for me, because she has great basic information about tools and methods, coupled with lots of inspiring ideas for mixing materials and disciplines. I love it.

Stunning book, informative and inspiring.
This book gives a comprehensive set of instructions on working with encaustic medium in producing art. The book itself is a work of art, with stunning illustrations and an elegant modern design. It is loaded with beautiful photographs. The writing and projects described are lively and provide plenty of detail and clarity for anyone looking to work in this medium. A bonus DVD is provided in the back of the book, giving it a double whammy. If you learn by seeing rather than by reading, you can have it all! Daniella Woolf is definitely an artist/rock star. She is fun and funny, relaxed and clear. This book is one that every artist should have in the studio, and it would make a great gift as well. I am happy to give it an enthusiastic thumbs up! Go get yours!

Terrific Encaustic Reference
I have just started teaching encaustics [I teach watercolors, acrylics and watercolor batiks], so I have watched a number of You Tube clips on encaustics, looking for "supports" in teaching. I had seen Daniela Woolf on one of those clips, so bought the book. Love it and think Daniella is a very generous artist. So many instructors demo only about 70% to 80% of their process, and leave a few important steps out. This book shares everything, IMHO. I gave it four stars, because I paint with the wax as much as do collage, scraping, texturizing, etc. Would have enjoyed seeing some more actual encaustic painting techniques. Even so, it's a pretty great resource!

The Encaustic Studio: A Wax Workshop in Mixed-Media Art
I teach encaustic painting and have been looking for an easy-to-understand book to suggest to my students that would cover all of the basics of my two day introduction class. This is it!! If you are new to encaustic, start with this book. As a teacher for R&F Paints, Daniella is well schooled in the latest safety procedures, tools and materials of this addictive process. Her clear and personable style makes this a true workshop-in-a-book...but than there is a DVD to even bring the teacher into your own studio. As an someone experienced with the media, I enjoyed all of the interesting ways that the author stretched my thinking and challenged my creativity. I especially like the layout. Each new chapter is introduced by a visual montage that made me want to jump right in.

DVD is faulty
I really like the way the author explain everything unfortunately the attached DVD is faulty, and it stops playing in the middle. I already exchanged once but the problem remains the same. It looks like all the DVDs are faulty.

I've referred back to this book often. As a beginner in encaustic art and local instruction, this book has been the best teacher I could have asked for.
