Excellent basic learning for statistics
The book is a classic. It is well written and explains basics of statistics very well -The language is very simple and the concepts explained are easy to grasp. I would recommend this book strongly for anyone interested in learning from scratch or as a refresher. You can use this book for self learning too.

Awesome book
I would not have passed my Statistics class without this book. Perfect for people who don't necessarily think in numbers.

Online Class
Using this book for an online course. Not the same edition as the teacher wanted, but good enough. Has all the same problems and information.

Not what I expected -- wrong version
I chose this book expecting edition 4, as advertised. I got edition 2 -- which is not what I wanted or expected.

best statistics book ever!!
This book is absolutely absolutely brilliant. Best text book on statistics ever written!!I wish I had known about this book years ago when I was studying statistics in college. I took 2 courses, spent a fortune but took away very little with me after the exams were over.this book on the other hand mapped out everything so clearly in my mind. not too late to read after all this years - better late than never. I'm not afraid of statistics any more after reading this book!Recommended to anyone who's interested in research of any kind, business analysis (which is what I'm doing currently), or analysis of any kind.Recommended to anyone who wants to gain insights from data and persuade other people with data using an analytical approachanother word on buying this book: i got the 2nd edition of this book which costs me only 3 quid. i don't think it's worth it buying the 3rd or 4th edition, and spend 10x more money. statistical theories don't change over time!

31 missing pages
I can't understand how is possible for a book editor to miss 31 pages of a book

Im großen und ganzen: go for it!

Not a maths book; more like a novel
I read a previous review stating this book avoids the use of "arcane" mathematical symbols, and, feeling curious about how the authors managed, I bought a copy for a couple of quid. Having browsed through it and having read a few random pages, I can confirm the most obscure mathematical symbols in the text appear to be the square root and the factorial sign, but even these are used very sparingly. It seems the authors have taken on the advice given to Stephen Hawking by his publisher--each mathematical formula in a book will reduce its sales by half--so they really have gone out of their way to avoid using mathematics (in a mathematics book, mind you). However, they have made up for it with very lengthy explanations of simple concepts. In fact, if you open the book at a random page, chances are it looks more like a novel than like a mathematics book. In the very few formulae present in the book, real English words like "slope" or "mean" are used rather than the mathematical symbols normally used to represent them (a previous reviewer sees using five letters for a concept instead of the one letter mathematicians normally use as a positive thing, but I don't; I see it as a waste of time.) Definitions of new concepts introduced in the book are extremely vague and also given in words . The concept is then talked about at length, and eventually a computational formula is given (in words, of course). In my opinion the way to go about it is to give a precise mathematical definition--yes, with a formula--and then, if necessary, briefly explain in English what the formula means and the motivation behind the definition. This method, employed by most authors, saves a lot of reading time, paper, and ink. The most important quality for me in a mathematics book is conciseness; I like an author that goes straight to the point and doesn't waste words; I like a book that doesn't waste my time; I like a book that's dense in ideas. This one isn't at all, and that's the reason I can't recommend it. There's too much talk in it and not enough action. If you have a basic mathematical background, do yourself a favour and buy a book that covers the same material using a few mathematical formulae but 80% less paper, and that doesn't talk to you like you're a baby or intellectually challenged. If you're planning on taking more advanced statistics or mathematics courses, follow the same advice, as you will eventually have to learn some real mathematics and use "arcane" mathematical symbols. The sooner you start, the better; there's no point in putting it off. You're not going to get through a degree in maths, physics, economics, or engineering on words alone. If you're one of those people who's allergic to maths but needs to pass a statistics course for some reason, invest a little bit of time in learning some basic mathematics, get comfortable with using mathematical symbols like x and y rather than the "an unknown quantity" English equivalent, and then buy some other basic statistics book: it will save you time (and you will have learned some maths, which can't be a bad thing).

Doesn't line up??
I kept having problems in this class because this book was off on the problem sets which made it increasingly difficult for me to get anything done properly. My professor had to accommodate specifically for me which causes more issues. Not worth the money, find it elsewhere.
