## Overview

The Spears 460 Series PVC Pipe Fitting Adapter is a 1-1/2" Schedule 40 white PVC connector featuring a barbed male insert on one end and a spigot connection on the other. Engineered for corrosion resistance and high strength, it ensures smooth, low-friction flow and complies with strict NSF/ANSI standards for safe potable water use. Ideal for irrigation, pool, spa, and chilled water systems, this fitting guarantees reliable, leak-proof connections between flexible tubing and rigid PVC pipes.

## Description

This Spears adapter pipe fitting, in white, is made of schedule 40 PVC and has a barbed insert end connection and a spigot end connection. This adapter fitting connects pipes or fittings with different end types, diameter, or materials. It has a barbed male insert connection for fitting into a flexible tube on one end and a male spigot connection for fitting into a female unthreaded pipe on the other end. The barbed end allows a quick connection to tubing and the spigot end has the same diameter as the pipe it connects to, minimizing turbulence and creating a tight seal. This schedule 40 (standard wall) fitting is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) for corrosion resistance, high strength, and less weight than fittings made from metal. It is compatible with schedule 40 PVC pipes and fittings. PVC can be connected to other materials such as steel, copper, or cast iron using transition fittings. This fitting provides superior flow to metal because of its smooth interior finish, which reduces friction and inhibits buildup of materials. This fitting complies with National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF)/American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 61 Annex G, NSF/ANSI 372, and conforms with lead content requirements for “lead free” plumbing as defined by California, Vermont, Maryland, and Louisiana state laws and the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act due to take effect January 2014. This adapter pipe fitting is suitable for use in cold-water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water, and chilled water applications.Pipe fittings are components used for connecting, terminating, controlling flow, and changing the direction of piping in many different industries. When purchasing pipe fittings, consider the application, as this will affect material type, shape, size, and required durability. Fittings are available threaded or unthreaded, in many shapes, styles, sizes, and schedules (pipe wall thickness).Spears Manufacturing produces thermoplastic fittings and valves for fluid, drain, waste, and vent systems. The company, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sylmar, CA, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

Review: Works perfectly, fits perfectly! High quality. Barb is the correct size. See photos. - Excellent 1" (and 3/4") slip spigot-to-barb fittings for PVC to poly pipe! You *can't* find these in big box stores it seems, only here at desertcart. There seems to be quite a bit of confusion in the comments about how a slip (meaning glued connection, vs. threaded) spigot works vs. a slip socket and how the sizing of barbs work. Please see the photos I've made to help understand. A 1 inch "SPIGOT" PVC barb does NOT fit directly on PVC pipe, it goes into a PVC socket, such as on the 1" threaded-to-socket PVC adapter (or into a 1" PVC T fitting, or into a 1" PVC elbow fitting, or into a 1" PVC coupler fitting), as in my photos. A 1" SOCKET PVC barb does fit directly on the pipe. As for PVC barbs themselves, there is a bit of a necessary trick involved. The barb will always be a bit smaller inner diameter than the pipe end. For example, a PVC socket barb that fits right on 1" schedule 40 PVC [which is 1" ID (inner) and 1-5/16" OD (outer)] might measure only around 3/4 ID or so inner on the barb end. This is normal! That is how barbs work. That difference in diameters is what makes the molded barbs happen. Does it matter? So little that it would even be hard to measure with instruments for just the length of the barb, *because the water flow rate through the narrower barb increases to compensate*. Where the diameter difference would start to matter is long lengths of pipe narrowing down to 3/4 ID from 1" ID. Then the liquid friction against the wall would start to matter. If you really, absolutely, need 1" ID through a system that will have barbs, you would need to go to 1-1/4" ID PVC pipe and an adapter here with 1-1/4" PVC socket on one and and a barb for 1-1/4" poly pipe on the other, and use 1-1/4" poly pipe, since the barb in this case would be around 1" ID. There are a lot of ways to hook PVC fittings together! Just depends on what your are trying to accomplish. In my case, today, I needed a super-short PVC 1" threaded-to-1"-barb fitting to thread into the end of a Rainbird 1" sprinkler valve, then on the barb end stuffed into a piece of old already-in-place 1" poly flexible pipe (then secured with a hose clamp). To do that - see my photo - I glued this 1" PVC spigot-to-barb fitting into a 1" PVC threaded-to-socket adapter. Voila! threaded-to-barb adapter. Worked great. ONE SUGGESTION: When gluing PVC parts together you always hold the glued connection together for at least 30 seconds to prevent a natural push-out that happens (air trapped tries to push the joint apart). This effect is much worse for "regular" consistency PVC glue than "medium" thickness. Always use medium for any size pipe under 4". When using medium consistency PVC glue it is kind of rare to get strong push-out with PVC fittings (like happens with the regular consistency), BUT it did happen with this spigot barb fitting. Not a fault of the fitting, a fault of me getting a little careless and stopped pushing together at about 15 seconds rather than pushing/holding the joint together for 30 seconds to a minute. Pushed back in with a 1/4 twist when the push-out happened and all was good. Just remember to hold your joint together for at least 30 seconds - for ANY PVC fitting -and ideally 1 minute. And remember, NO WATER in the pipe or joint for at least 2 hours to let the PVC glue set properly. If there is some water in the pipe, like you are assembling existing sprinkler pipes that are still wet inside, but sure to use the "Rain-R-Shine" type of PVC cement that won't gel up if water hits it before it is fully cured (the 2 hour wait). Happy plumbing!
Review: Fits - It's plastic, it's round and it did the job perfectly. Recommended.
