Will this bulb be brighter in a 6 volt torch?

Designed for 3 volts, 6 volts is to much for this bulb and could burn it out !

I desperately need a few led replacements for some old aaa penlights that utilize a bulb marked g e 224 will this led work or do you know of one? tia

this won't work, in fact it won't even fit! a 224 bulb has a screw base, but these bulbs have a flange base. Even if you could figure out a way to get it to fit, the results will be poor-a 224 bulb has a lens on it, and does not rely on a reflector to work properly, but these bulbs do not have a lens on them, and do rely on the reflector to work properly. I'm not sure if there is a good quality LED 224 type bulb, you may want to try searching for one

Why doesn't it work? installed in two flashlights.

I don't know, unless your flashlight is using reverse polarity If so, see if the batteries will make proper contact if you put them in backwards. If so,this may work(because these bulbs have a polarity, unlike a standard bulb).

Would this replace a philips hpx21 2.4v 0.80a 21 lumens bulb?

Yes. I have been replacing all my flashlights that have this style base bulb with this led bulb.
