A ballast is a device used to manage the energy output in a florescent light. All florescent light technology needs ballasts to work. Ballasts come in two types magnetic and electronic. these bulbs work with florescent lighting technology using magnetic ballasts.These are old fashioned florescent lights that are used in systems that have old style magnetic ballasts. I have display nooks in my house lit by these old style florescent lamps with old magnetic ballasts. If you would like to know if your lights use the old magnetic ballasts listen in a totally quiet room. If you hear a slight to pronounced hum when the lights are turned on then chances are good you have old style magnetic ballasts. Minus the hum old style magnetic ballasts are awesome. The new energy efficient ballasts are electronic ballasts which are prone to breakdown after only a few years lite use. Magnetic ballasts have a long history of lasting a LONG TIME! If you have an old fluorescent fixture in good repair that works keep it because; the new green electronic ballasts are still too unreliable and buggy.UPDATE - DECEMBER 7TH, 2015!These bulbs are awesome they emit a blue white light that is very pleasing if you use them in commercial applications. Most people would find the light from these bulbs too harsh for use in the "home." I am autistic and weird so my tastes run counter to most common folk. I like harsh white light because it insures colors are true and I love the uniform brightness. These lights are not the classic cool blue light you might be thinking of. This is truly a more white light. The lights are bright and I did not have any issues with bad bulbs. the bulbs were well packed and arrived quickly after my order. The quality of the bulbs was first quality and they last a good while. Don't let the picture of the bulb fool you they look better than shown in this lame product picture.Some people are saying these lights give off a purple ultraviolent glow. I have not experienced that at all. My lifes are a daylight white color. Only time I see flourescent lights turn into black light is just before they go bad at work. These lights just get that horrid black soot like deposit near the ends of the bulbs just before they die.I brought these GE bulbs on the date specified on my posting and today Monday, December 7th, 2015 I have yet to need to change the first batch of these GE light bulbs I installedat the time of purchase. This proves that these GE bulbs last like iron. There is none of the tell tale dark blotches at the bulb ends that suggest the tube is close to failing. The light is still daylight and even. The fixture still hums along but I find the noise soothing especially when I am hope alone. These GE bulbs are the BOMB BIGGITY! This was an awesome purchase!Just for comparrision I went through 8 of those cheap flourscent bulbs made in China or whereever. This is one time where good old US GE bulbs are superior. Of course GE bulbs might not be made in the USA anymore but they are engineered to GE specs and those specs apper to be better than the cheap bulbs because these GE Bulbs last almost five times longer.

They fit my aunt's old kitchen light fixtures well and are fairly bright

I have noticed how some sellers have eliminated this type of tube lighting from their inventory. Replacing the T12, 24" is a T8, 24" and from a users standpoint I am not upset a whole lot; however, I still have 2 T-12 fixtures that have remaining life so, maybe this is my last pack of light because they sure last a long time especially for one of the fixtures and 'bulb' inside a small closet. The other one stays on about 24 hours a day and seldom takes time out and ironically has not been replaced as often as the infrequently turned off one. Someone probably performed a study that said do not cut them off and this is the results. I am from the old school, you know that one roomer with red exterior walls and a bell, and was taught if it is not burning it is not using power. Who cares? These are just my speed when it comes to lighting interior spaces and it does a super job.

GE has been a light making provider for years and these fluorescent light bulbs are no exception. If I had to wait until I used the box of these, most of you would have found the latest and newest type of light making products and chances are they would not be these. Until that happens and for my simple mind, I hope it does not take place real soon. The existing light fixture must be among the cheapest on the market; however, when this bulb is installed, there is no hint of a flicker nor misconnection. I normally expect one bulb to last over 2 years based on usage. We are a long time away from that; however, based on the several fixtures using these bulbs and their constant clean light, we will need replacements in 2017 or later. That is an ultra conservative estimate, too.

I was so happy when I found these on Amazon as they are terribly difficult to find in my area. The quality is also much better than what I can find locally, being that the locally found ones burn out quickly but this setime of 6 from Amazon are still working great. The typical bulb purchased locally lasted 2 months max, but this set (still using the first one out of the package) is exceeding that since we are on month 6 of use with the first bulb. Great buy and shipped safely, all bulbs are in perfect condition.

Needed bulbs for two of the six under cabinet lights in our kitchen. Ordered these, but very disappointed. Inferior quality, very dull and gray light. Returned for a refund and was only given partial credit back. Will not use this seller again and cannot recommend.Went to Home Depot and bought new bulbs which are bright and give cool white light. Should have gone there to begin with.
